KARIEGA – For 35 years, the Volkswagen Community Trust has been a cornerstone of positive change for countless individuals in and around Kariega. Established in 1989, the Trust was born from a commitment to uplift communities and provide a pathway to opportunity. What began as a modest initiative has since grown into a powerful force for good, with Volkswagen Group Africa at the heart of this ongoing transformation. For the company, this is not merely corporate responsibility—it’s a deep-rooted belief that every individual deserves a future filled with potential and promise.

A Legacy of Investment and Change
Since its inception, the Volkswagen Community Trust has made a profound impact through its diverse range of Community Social Investment (CSI) projects. Over the past 35 years, the Trust has invested more than R570 million into initiatives that serve the community, with a staggering 84% of these funds dedicated to projects focused on education, youth development, and community wellbeing.

The Trust’s unwavering dedication to bettering lives is evident in the success stories of its various initiatives. One such example is the Ikhwezi Lomso Early Childhood Development Centre, which opened in 2011 in Kariega. To date, this centre has provided invaluable support to 1,202 children, laying the foundation for their educational journeys and ensuring they enter primary school ready to learn.

Another key milestone in the Trust’s history is the loveLife Y-Centre in Kariega, which opened in 2012 with an initial investment of R20 million. Since its inception, the centre has touched the lives of over 350,000 young people through its wide array of health, education, and life skills programmes. This centre has become a sanctuary for youth, offering them the tools and resources they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

Volkswagen Community Trust 35 Years Of Impact And Empowerment In Kariega And Beyond

Empowering Employees, Strengthening Communities
Volkswagen Group Africa’s employees have been integral to the success of these initiatives. More than 2,100 employees contribute to CSI projects each month through voluntary financial donations. These contributions play a crucial role in sustaining and expanding the Trust’s far-reaching efforts. The company’s Show of Hands events, held 38 times since 2011, also encourage employees to get directly involved in hands-on community service, from building educational infrastructure to supporting local health initiatives.

Perhaps one of the most groundbreaking programmes launched by the Trust is the Legacy Literacy Programme, which began in 2015. With a focus on eradicating illiteracy among children under the age of 10, the programme has already benefitted 6,854 learners. This initiative is transforming lives by ensuring that children are given the academic tools to succeed, setting them on a path to greater opportunities in life.

Extending Reach Through Partnerships
In addition to its direct efforts, the Volkswagen Community Trust has also partnered with numerous NGOs, amplifying its impact across a broader spectrum. Since 1994, the Trust has invested approximately R70 million in support of external partners working in areas such as health, education, and social services. These partnerships have enabled the Trust to extend its reach and provide support where it’s needed most, ensuring that the vision of a more equitable and prosperous future remains within grasp for many.

A Vision for the Future
Reflecting on the journey of the Trust, Nonkqubela Maliza, VWGA Corporate and Government Affairs Director, said, “As we look back on 35 years of the Volkswagen Community Trust, we aren’t just celebrating the projects we’ve accomplished or the funds we’ve invested. The true cause for celebration is the lives we have touched, the people we have empowered, and the voices we have amplified. When we started the Trust, we built it on the belief that we had both the power and the responsibility to have a lasting legacy in our communities, and with this belief, we will continue our efforts for years to come.”

As the Volkswagen Community Trust looks ahead, it remains steadfast in its commitment to creating meaningful change, strengthening communities, and empowering individuals to unlock their full potential. The Trust’s work is far from done; it is, in fact, only just beginning. With the support of employees, partners, and the community at large, the Volkswagen Community Trust will continue to shine a light on the path to a brighter tomorrow.
