As the Bugatti Type 35 celebrates its 100th anniversary, the automotive world turns its eyes to the UK’s most opulent Concours d’Elegance, Salon Privé. Hosted at the historic Blenheim Palace, the event, presented by Aviva Private Clients, will take place on August 28-29, 2024. This year, the Type 35 will be the centerpiece, showcasing its unmatched legacy in the Bugatti – From Grand Prix to Grand Touring class.
The Legendary Bugatti Type 35
The Pinnacle of Pre-War Racing
The Bugatti Type 35 is celebrated as one of the most successful and recognizable pre-war racing cars. First unveiled at the 1924 French Grand Prix, it featured a two-liter, naturally-aspirated straight-eight engine. Over its illustrious career, the Type 35 secured over 1,000 victories, including five consecutive Targa Florio wins and the unofficial Grand Prix World Championship in 1926. Legendary drivers such as Tazio Nuvolari and Louis Chiron piloted this racing marvel.
Engineering Mastery
The Type 35’s success can be attributed to its exceptional engineering. With a lightweight, all-aluminum body and advanced features like an inline eight-cylinder engine with a crankshaft running in needle- and roller-bearings, the Type 35 achieved a remarkable 6,000rpm and 75hp output in its base form. Its forged and hollowed front axle, distinctive eight-spoke cast alloy wheels, and detachable rims contributed to its outstanding handling and agility.
Evolution of Excellence
The Type 35 evolved through several iterations, each enhancing its performance. The Type 35 T increased engine displacement to 2,262cc, while the Type 35 C added a Roots-style supercharger, boosting power to 128hp. The ultimate incarnation, the Type 35 B, combined a larger 2.3-liter engine and supercharger, achieving 140hp and a top speed of 215 km/h (133 mph). This model will be the star at Salon Privé.

The Iconic Type 35 B: Chassis #4888
Originally ordered as a Type 35 in November 1926 by Dutch lawyer Dr. Johannes Last, chassis #4888 was soon upgraded to a Type 35 B, becoming the sixth of its kind. Unlike many of its peers, this car was delivered in full Grand Prix trim but was also road-legal with added lights and stowage space. Its extensive history includes ownership by Frenchman Maurice Anguenot, London dealer Jack Lemon-Burton, and ex-Bugatti mechanic Louis Giron. The car saw numerous competitions and underwent several restorations, with its most recent one retaining its original components and bodywork.
The Elegant Type 57 Cabriolet by Saoutchik
Complementing the Type 35 B at Salon Privé will be the award-winning Bugatti Type 57 Cabriolet by Saoutchik. Launched in 1934 and designed by Jean Bugatti, the Type 57 was known for its versatility and advanced engineering. The featured Cabriolet, chassis #57735, was delivered in 1939 and later restored to win Best in Show at the 1985 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. With its graceful lines and opulent design, it provides a striking contrast to the racing-focused Type 35.
A Must-See Event at Blenheim Palace
Salon Privé’s Bugatti – From Grand Prix to Grand Touring class will also feature other notable entries, including the Type 38 Philadelphia by Figoni and the Type 55 by Gangloff. The event promises to be a highlight for Bugatti enthusiasts and automotive aficionados alike.
As Salon Privé celebrates its 19th anniversary, the Bugatti Type 35’s centennial adds a historic touch to this prestigious event. The combination of the Type 35 B’s racing legacy and the Type 57’s elegance ensures a memorable showcase at Blenheim Palace. For those wishing to witness automotive history, tickets are available at Salon Privé Concours.
Quote from Andrew Bagley, Concours Chairman
“Salon Privé is delighted to showcase the Bugatti Type 35, one of the most renowned pre-war race cars, in its centenary year. With legendary drivers like Nuvolari and Chiron at the wheel, the Type 35 was a force to be reckoned with, and today original, matching numbers cars like this are rare and hugely desirable. The Type 57 Saoutchik joining it is the perfect foil for the ’35, with its graceful lines and sense of opulence. They’ll both be representing a class that’s already shaping up to be a Mecca for Bugatti aficionados.”
