The 2025 Simola Hillclimb may be a highlight of South Africa’s motorsport calendar for car enthusiasts, but this year, Suzuki Motorcycles made sure two wheels stole a bit of the spotlight. Among the 86 cars officially competing for hillclimb honours, two brand-new Suzuki GSX-8R sportbikes made a surprise appearance—bringing speed, spectacle, and serious style to Knysna’s famed hill.
While the bikes weren’t officially timed, their presence was more than symbolic. This dynamic display marked the local debut of the GSX-8R, Suzuki’s newest middleweight sportbike, and served as a launchpad for the brand’s exciting GSX-8R Cup—a new single-make racing series designed to deliver high-performance thrills at a more accessible cost.
“The Simola Hillclimb is an opportunity for us to release the Suzuki GSX-8R Cup to the public,” explained Stuart Baker, Suzuki South Africa’s Sales Manager for Motorcycles. “It’s a single-make series, it’s up and running, and we’d like to get as many riders as we can into a cost-effective racing series.”
Taking the bikes up the hill were Nicole van Aswegen and Tristin Pienaar, the latter of whom is Suzuki’s first officially sponsored rider in the new series. Pienaar is already turning heads—having claimed victory in the first two heats of his racing category—proving he’s a rising star to watch as the Cup gains traction.

“For this weekend, we’ve got Nicole and Tristin doing our demo rides,” Baker continued. “In terms of showcasing the product, what better place to get all the press together and all the motoring guys to come along and have a look at our bikes? And let’s face it—if you like cars, you’ve got to like bikes.”
Their two runs each up the twisting Simola Hill brought added spectacle to the event, with spectators treated to the kind of corner-carving precision and ear-pleasing engine notes that only performance bikes can deliver. For the riders, the hill offered an adrenaline-fuelled playground—without the pressure of the stopwatch.
And the fun isn’t over just yet. Sunday promises more demo rides from Suzuki, allowing fans another chance to see the GSX-8R in action. While the official entrants will be pushing for podiums and class wins, Suzuki’s mission is simple: show off the bike, stoke excitement, and remind everyone that motorsport’s thrill doesn’t stop at four wheels.
With the GSX-8R Cup kicking into gear, Suzuki is positioning itself not only as a brand for passionate riders but as a driving force in building South Africa’s next generation of accessible, grassroots motorcycle racing. And judging by the grins and camera flashes at Simola, they’re off to a fast start.
