The 2025 Moto3 World Championship made its Italian stop at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli for the San Marino GP, the 16th round of an exhilarating season. Marking the close of the European leg before the championship heads east to tackle the Pacific-Asia rounds, the event once again saw South Africa’s sole representative, rookie sensation Ruche Moodley, showcasing his talent on the global stage.
Moodley entered the weekend with confidence. “I know Misano from having competed here before, so I knew we’d have a good weekend,” the 17-year-old remarked. That familiarity with the fast-flowing, technical circuit paid off immediately as Moodley posted competitive lap times from the outset.
Blistering Pace in Qualifying
The South African’s confidence carried into Q1, where he relished the challenge of the Misano layout. “I really enjoy riding the Moto3 bike here. There is a nice flow to the circuit with many fast corners that link together. In Moto3 we are full throttle through some of these corners. When you nail the lap here, it is really satisfying,” he said.
Moodley’s approach proved effective. He topped Q1, earning himself a coveted spot in the Q2 pole shootout. “I had a good run in Q1, finding clear track when I needed it and managed to gain a slipstream at the perfect moment,” he explained.
Q2, however, proved far trickier. Riders jostled for position, wary of giving rivals a slipstream advantage. Many returned to the pitlane without completing a timed lap, but Moodley remained on track, determined to make the most of the opportunity. Despite a minor mistake on his attack lap, he secured 17th on the grid—a solid platform from which to launch his race. The session also included a memorable encounter with Formula One star Lando Norris, a self-confessed MotoGP fan who dropped by the BOE Motorsport garage to congratulate Moodley.
A More Aggressive Race Start Pays Off
Moodley’s previous struggles with race starts were evident in past outings, but Misano saw a change in approach. Launching off the line with newfound aggression, he climbed to 15th place by the halfway mark of the opening lap. “The race pace was incredible today. The front of the field was battling hard and still setting blisteringly quick lap times. This meant the pack strung out a bit from the early stages. I was having great battles with the guys around me. I’d gain a position or two, then get overtaken in the space of a single lap. It was great to battle with others and learn where I could be stronger,” Moodley reflected.
The young South African settled into 17th for much of the race before snatching 16th place, finishing just one spot ahead of his grid start. Though shy of scoring points, his performance demonstrated tangible progress in racecraft and confidence under pressure.

Moodley’s Misano weekend offered multiple takeaways: competitive pace, a stronger approach to starts, and invaluable experience battling in the pack. Meeting Lando Norris added a memorable highlight, underscoring the growing recognition of Moodley’s talent on the international stage.
“There are so many positives to take away from this weekend. I had the pace to make it into Q2 and gained places at the start of the race. Meeting one of my racing heroes, Lando, was memorable. He is such a cool guy. I am really looking forward to the remainder of the season,” Moodley concluded.
As the championship heads east, Ruche Moodley’s Misano performance suggests the rookie is not just learning the ropes—he is steadily making his mark. With a mix of pace, tenacity, and a willingness to adapt, the South African is shaping up to be a contender worth watching in the closing stages of the 2025 season.
