FORD MOTOR COMPANY OF SOUTHERN AFRICA’S RESPONSE

Total industry sales for the month of May came in at 57 339 (including 5 655 AMH sales). Following a notoriously difficult sales month in April, sales were up 15% percent for the month, though slightly down on the May 2006 figures.

“Last month’s sales were severely affected by the introduction of the eNaTIS vehicle registration system as well as the reduced selling days in April,” explains Ford Motor Company’s, Jacques Brent. “As these difficulties are resolved the sales figures should start to normalize creating a more accurate picture of the market.”

Ford Motor Company sold a total of 6 521 vehicles during the month of May, of which 3 366 were passenger cars and 3 155 were commercial vehicles. The Ford Fiesta remained the top selling passenger car for Ford with 724 units. The Ford Bantam continues to gain ground with 1 741 units sold, an increase of 8.8% over the corresponding month in 2006.

“Overall the difficulties presented by eNaTIS continue to affect the sales. Many of April’s registrations will have carried over to May, therefore slightly inflating May’s numbers,” continued Brent.

“Yet again the passenger car market is showing signs of softening, with a decline of 5.1% for the first five months of the year when compared to the same period last year. On the other hand the Light Commercial Vehicle segment continues to flourish, reflecting a growth of 15.5% over the same periods. Given the continued softening of the passenger car market this year it is evident that the consumer driven vehicles sales growth has probably come to an end.” concluded Brent.
