LOS ANGELES, Nov. 20, 2025 — Hyundai Motor America has pulled the wraps off one of its most expressive design studies to date, unveiling the CRATER Concept during AutoMobility LA 2025. Conceived at the Hyundai America Technical Center (HATCI) in Irvine, California, this compact off-road SUV is more than a glimpse of future capability—it is a manifesto for the next evolution of Hyundai’s rugged XRT design language.
Designed for U.S. customers who crave authentic toughness, function-first design, and real-world off-road ability, the CRATER Concept builds on the momentum of production XRT models such as the IONIQ 5 XRT, SANTA CRUZ XRT, and PALISADE XRT PRO. With its bold proportions, sculptural steel-inspired surfaces, and a suite of highly functional features for outdoor exploration, the vehicle channels a distinctively Californian sense of adventure.
A Design Expression Rooted in Extreme Environments
“CRATER began with a question: ‘What does freedom look like?’” said SangYup Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of Hyundai and Genesis Global Design. “It is shaped by an unending drive to explore — to inspire our customers to explore deeper and embrace the impact of adventure.”
That question became the guiding force behind a design theme known as The Art of Steel, a sculptural interpretation of strength and formability. Every surface—whether sweeping or chiseled—echoes the material qualities of steel itself: powerful, gentle, and timeless.
The Impact of Adventure exterior theme further anchors the design, drawing directly from the landscapes that inspired it. Crisp bodysides, sheer fenders, wide skid plates, and purposeful utility details communicate resilience through form alone.
Sculpted for Exploration
Despite its compact footprint, the CRATER Concept is built to venture far beyond smooth gravel paths. Its monocoque architecture, steep approach and departure angles, and strong stance provide the foundation for serious off-road intent.
Key standout design elements include:
Hexagonal Faceted Wheels
A dramatic visual highlight, the 18-inch wheels were inspired by the imagined impact of a hexagonal asteroid into metal, forming a fractal crater. Wrapped in 33-inch off-road tires, they provide both traction and visual weight.
Wide Skid Plate
Stretching beneath the vehicle, the skid plate is at once protective hardware and visual anchor, reinforcing the CRATER Concept’s capability-first ethos.
Roof Platform & Limb Risers
The roof platform is optimized for auxiliary lights, gear storage, and additional off-road equipment, while limb risers protect the windscreen from overgrown, narrow trails.
Hidden Functional Gems
True to the spirit of discovery, Hyundai has woven clever surprises throughout the vehicle:
- A recovery hook that doubles as a bottle opener.
- Side-mirror cameras that detach and function as flashlights, ideal for emergencies or capturing memorable moments in the wild.
A Cabin Built for Tech-Savvy, Trail-Ready Adventurers
Inside, the CRATER Concept’s Curve of Upholstery theme blends technical shapes with soft-yet-durable materials. The overall impression is rugged yet warm, crafted to withstand dust, grit, and the wear of repeated adventure.
A few highlights:
Customizable BYOD Digital Experience
Instead of a fixed interface, the CRATER Concept adopts a Bring Your Own Device approach, allowing drivers to tailor their in-car digital environment.
Full-Width Dynamic Head-Up Display
Integrating navigation data, vehicle information, and even the rearview camera feed, the display enhances situational awareness.
Crash Pad With Ambient Lighting
Shaped like folded metal, the crash pad features perforations that glow with soft ambient light—an unexpected blend of utility and emotional expression.
Structural Interior Expression
A functional roll cage defines the cabin, with integrated grab handles that reinforce the concept’s readiness for tough trails.
Supportive, Wraparound Seating
Three-dimensional padding, cylindrical cushions and a dynamic headrest form seats designed for stability and comfort in rugged conditions. A four-point seatbelt hints at enhanced off-road safety ambitions.
Interactive Personality
A symbolic character known as CRATER MAN appears throughout the vehicle as a playful, hidden companion—offering small moments of storytelling for those who take the time to look.
Ready for the Rough Stuff
The CRATER Concept’s off-road toolkit reinforces its adventurous DNA. A tactile, gear-inspired multi-function controller provides intuitive access to traction, braking, and locking differential functions. A terrain selector includes SNOW, SAND, and MUD modes, rounding out a robust hardware philosophy.
Additional features include:
- Downhill brake control
- Trailer brake control
- Compass and altimeter displays
Colors and Materials Inspired by California
The CRATER Concept wears a striking Dune Gold Matte finish—an earthy green-gold tone reflecting the sagebrush, golden grasses, and coastal cliffs of Southern California. Anodized orange accents introduce a layer of playful energy.
Inside, the Black Ember Interior embraces a palette meant to patina with use. Black leather and Alcantara deliver durability, while brushed metal adds industrial precision. Topographic etching across select surfaces creates a subtle visual narrative of exploration.
A Vision of Hyundai’s Rugged Future
The CRATER Concept is on display throughout AutoMobility LA 2025 and during the Los Angeles Auto Show until November 30, joining Hyundai’s lineup of acclaimed vehicles including the 2026 Palisade, IONIQ 5, and high-performance IONIQ 6 N.
As a design study, the CRATER Concept signals Hyundai’s growing commitment to emotionally expressive, capability-driven adventure vehicles. It stands not only as a showcase of future XRT styling, but as a bold invitation—to explore deeper, travel further, and embrace the untamed edges of the journey.
