There are moments in sport that stretch beyond the stopwatch, where the finish line is merely the beginning of something far more memorable. At the SPAR Women’s Challenge in Cape Town, one such moment unfolded when Hermanus runner Melanie Raaf arrived as a participant and left as the owner of a brand-new car.
Raaf, who had entered the race simply to enjoy the atmosphere and camaraderie, found herself at the centre of an unexpected celebration after being announced as the winner of a Hyundai EXTER in a lucky draw sponsored by Hyundai Automotive South Africa. Valued at R269,900, the prize transformed an already meaningful day into a life-changing occasion.
“I came here just to run and be part of something positive with other women but never imagined I would leave with a car,” she said. “I came to the race as a commuter this morning and I am now a proud owner of this beautiful EXTER. It is a truly life-changing moment and I am so grateful to Hyundai!”
The race itself drew a record 18,000 participants, underscoring its growing significance as a platform for health, empowerment and community connection. With 5km and 10km routes, the event continues to champion accessible fitness while fostering a strong sense of unity among women across the region.
For Hyundai, the moment encapsulated more than a brand activation. It was a tangible expression of its commitment to creating meaningful experiences for customers. Western Cape Regional Manager Gcina Mahonga described the handover as a highlight that reflects the brand’s purpose.
“Seeing thousands of women unite around health, fun and wellness is incredibly inspiring,” said Mahonga. “Handing over the Hyundai EXTER keys to a very jubilant Melanie while witnessing her joy is what we strive to do each day at Hyundai…to delight and create great memories to consumers through our vehicles.”
Positioned as a practical and cost-conscious compact SUV, the EXTER aligns with shifting consumer priorities. Its fuel efficiency and low running costs make it particularly appealing in a market where affordability and everyday usability are increasingly critical. From daily commutes to school runs and weekend getaways, the vehicle is designed to integrate seamlessly into modern lifestyles.
Hyundai Automotive South Africa CEO Stanley Anderson reinforced this positioning, noting that value-driven mobility remains front of mind for many buyers. “Today’s consumers are looking for smarter ways to manage their finances,” he said. “The Hyundai EXTER offers a balance of fuel efficiency, low running costs and everyday usability.”
While Raaf’s story captured hearts off the course, the race also delivered compelling performances among the elite field. Tayla Kavanagh claimed her first SPAR Women’s 10km Challenge victory in 31:33, narrowly ahead of defending champion Glenrose Xaba, who finished in 31:38. Kyla Jacobs secured third place with a personal best of 32:16, rounding out a fiercely competitive podium.
Beyond the individual triumphs, the event continues to play a significant role in the local economy. With thousands of participants and spectators converging on Cape Town, the race contributes millions of rand to tourism, hospitality and retail sectors, reinforcing its status as both a sporting and economic catalyst.
For Raaf, however, the day will be remembered for something far simpler yet infinitely more profound. A run that began as a celebration of movement and community ended with a set of keys, a new chapter and a story that perfectly captures the unpredictable magic of participation.
