DETROIT – Winners in this year’s collegiate football bowl games will be well documented, but off-the-field victories earned by campus champions often are more impactful yet rarely get the same attention.
As the NCAA partner for Human Achievement, Buick is using the Buick Human Highlight Reel to celebrate these and other stories during this week’s Bowl Championship Series.
The Buick Human Highlight Reel is a collection and archive of stories created to celebrate the achievements of former student-athletes who have applied the lessons of sport to community involvement, reaching out to help and connect in meaningful ways.
The latest addition to the reel, selected from Buick’s “Share Your Story” personal submissions, features Mick Ebeling, a former NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball player from the United States Air Force Academy.
Ebeling, while successful in his collegiate athletic career, went on to make a greater impact on society when his Ebeling Group and The Not Impossible Foundation. The foundation assembled a group of technology specialists and created the EyeWriter, a breakthrough device created for “TEMPTONE”, a highly regarded L.A.-based street artist diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) in 2003.
The device, recognized as one of 50 Best Inventions of 2010 by Time Magazine, uses low-cost glasses, eye-tracking and open-source laser software to allow people to write and draw by tracking their eye movement and translating it to lines on a screen.
“The Buick Human Highlight Reel celebrates former college student-athletes like Mick Ebeling who are leading winning efforts in their communities,” said Tony DiSalle, U.S. vice president of Buick Marketing. “By sharing their stories, Buick and our partners hope to inspire others to go above and beyond to help others achieve their fullest potential in life.”
Ebeling’s story will air during the Buick Halftime Show during the Discover Orange Bowl tonight, (Wednesday Jan. 4, 2011), on ESPN. It will also be available in long-form on https://www.ncaa.com/buick.
Since its introduction during the 2011 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship, nearly 60 videos telling stories of human achievement have been created and added to the Buick Human Highlight Reel. The reel recently received the 2011 Creative Media Award for Television from Media Magazine.
