Lotus has taken another bold step in its electrification journey with the unveiling of the new Eletre X, introducing a groundbreaking hybrid platform designed to combine electric performance with extraordinary long-distance capability. Revealed in Shanghai on March 6, 2026, the technology—known as X Hybrid—represents Europe’s first and only hybrid system capable of producing 952 PS while delivering a combined driving range of more than 1,200 km.

The system will make its European debut in the upcoming Lotus Eletre X, expanding the brand’s electric SUV line-up while pushing the boundaries of electrified performance mobility. With up to 350 km of pure electric driving range and a philosophy centred on “electric first, hybrid empowered,” Lotus aims to eliminate the persistent concern of range anxiety without compromising the thrilling driving character for which the brand is known.

The X Hybrid system first appeared globally in China within a local-market SUV called Lotus FOR ME, which currently serves as the technology’s reference prototype. While the specifications announced today relate to that model, the European version of the Eletre X will receive its final technical confirmation closer to its official launch in June 2026. Deliveries across Europe are expected to begin in the fourth quarter of the year, with UK customers receiving vehicles shortly afterwards.

The name Eletre X symbolises the convergence of electric performance, hybrid versatility and Lotus engineering purity. The “X” represents a new chapter for the company, signalling breakthrough innovation and the expansion of its electrified portfolio.

At the heart of the platform lies an electric-first hybrid powertrain capable of seamlessly transitioning between pure EV operation, series hybrid mode and parallel hybrid drive. This multi-mode architecture allows the system to intelligently adapt to speed, battery state of charge and driver input, ensuring optimal efficiency and responsiveness in a wide range of driving conditions.

Driving the system is a remarkably powerful generator rated at 150 kW, designed to maintain consistent performance during extended journeys. Under suitable conditions it can produce up to roughly 25 kWh of energy per hour, replenishing the battery while the vehicle is in motion and supporting sudden bursts of power when required. The system’s advanced 900-volt electrical architecture enables extremely rapid charging capability and sustained high-performance output, while sophisticated thermal management ensures stable operation across a wide range of temperatures.

Performance figures underline Lotus’ commitment to delivering supercar-level capability in an electrified SUV. The reference platform pairs front and rear permanent magnet synchronous motors to generate a combined output of up to 700 kW, equivalent to 952 PS and 935 Nm of torque. This allows the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.3 seconds. Even when battery charge falls to around 20 percent, the system can still deliver approximately 550 kW, maintaining strong acceleration during demanding scenarios such as mountain overtakes.

The X Hybrid platform also introduces extreme charging capabilities. Thanks to its 900-volt and 6C architecture, the battery can recharge from 20 to 80 percent in approximately nine minutes under optimal conditions. Four levels of regenerative braking further help to recapture energy during everyday driving, contributing to the system’s overall efficiency.

Range is one of the defining strengths of the new architecture. A 70 kWh battery combined with a 52-litre fuel tank allows the system to achieve a combined driving range well above 1,200 km, while up to 350 km can be covered in full electric mode. For many drivers this means daily journeys can be completed entirely on electric power, with the hybrid system ready to extend range seamlessly when longer distances are required.

Beyond straight-line performance, Lotus engineers have ensured the platform delivers the dynamic precision expected from the brand. Technology demonstrated in the FOR ME prototype includes a 48-volt active anti-roll bar capable of delivering up to 1,400 Nm of torque with a response time of around 10 milliseconds, helping maintain exceptional cornering stability. An active rear spoiler with four adjustable positions can generate up to 120 kg of downforce depending on driving mode, while high-performance Brembo six-piston front brakes provide strong stopping power with a 100 to 0 km/h distance of approximately 33.9 metres.

The suspension system combines dual-chamber air springs with dual-valve dampers that can react in as little as two milliseconds, allowing the vehicle to balance comfort with sharp dynamic control. A double-wishbone front layout further enhances precision, while specially developed tyres ensure stable high-speed performance and strong wet-weather grip.

Inside the cabin, the Eletre X emphasises craftsmanship and technological sophistication. The interior can be specified with full Nappa leather upholstery covering roughly 40 square metres and crafted from nine individual hides. An advanced KEF Reference audio system with 23 speakers and 2,160 watts of power delivers a 7.1.4 surround-sound architecture designed to create an immersive listening experience for every occupant.

Adding to the sense of luxury is a panoramic roof featuring PDLC dimming technology, offering ten levels of transparency across a surface area of approximately 2.4 square metres. The design also increases headroom by around 30 mm compared with more conventional roof structures, contributing to a spacious and airy cabin environment.

Full European specifications for the Eletre X—including final power outputs, charging performance, WLTP driving range and chassis configuration—will be confirmed closer to the vehicle’s market introduction. For now, the X Hybrid platform offers a glimpse into Lotus’ electrified future, one that promises the immediacy of electric driving combined with the freedom of long-distance travel.

With the Eletre X, Lotus is signalling that electrification does not have to mean compromise. Instead, the company is positioning hybrid technology as a bridge between everyday electric convenience and the limitless range demanded by modern mobility.
