Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd. is set to supply its Advan racing tires to the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL), marking a significant milestone with the first autonomous car race scheduled for April 27, 2024, in the United Arab Emirates. This groundbreaking event, organized by Aspire—the technological management and business development sector of the UAE’s Advanced Technology Research Council—aims to redefine the boundaries of future mobility through innovation.

The A2RL will feature the driverless SF23 formula racing car, commonly seen in the prestigious Super Formula Championship series in Asia, highlighting a collaborative effort between the UAE and Japan. Japan Race Promotion Inc. (JRP), which manages Super Formula, will provide the racing cars, outfitted with cutting-edge software crafted by Aspire.

The race will showcase the capabilities of autonomous driving technology, with eight international teams from Asia, North America, and Europe competing. These teams, composed of elite software programmers and engineers, will challenge each other’s algorithms and driving software, vying for the grand prize of $2.25 million.

Yokohama’s role extends beyond just supplying tires; it is a core supporter of the A2RL through its provision of the Advan A005 tires. These tires are notable for their sustainability, containing 33% sustainable materials—such as natural rubber, recycled iron, and bio-derived compounds from oil palm nuts and orange peels—while maintaining high performance levels.

The involvement in A2RL aligns with Yokohama’s broader strategy under its new three-year plan, Yokohama Transformation 2026 (YX2026). The plan emphasizes the expansion of its high-value product lines across its global flagship brands, including Advan and Geolandar. Moreover, Yokohama views its participation in various motorsports, from elite to grassroots levels, as vital for enhancing brand strength and demonstrating product efficacy in demanding conditions.

This event not only highlights the evolution of autonomous technology in motorsports but also reinforces Yokohama’s commitment to innovation and environmental sustainability in tire manufacturing.
