Johannesburg, 20 September 2024 – The excitement in the air was palpable as Fedilitas Secondary School emerged victorious in the 2024 VW Train 4 Life Girls Soccer Tournament, triumphing over Fons Luminus Secondary School in a nail-biting penalty shootout. The final, held on 17 September at the University of Johannesburg’s Soweto campus, showcased the remarkable talent and determination of young female athletes from across the region.
The VW Train 4 Life initiative is more than just a sports competition; it represents a vital educational and empowerment program aimed at young girls. Designed for under-15 participants, it combines an exhilarating soccer tournament with a robust life skills curriculum. This dual focus not only fosters athletic prowess but also equips Grade 8 and 9 learners with essential skills that transcend the field.
Lucas Radebe, the revered Soweto-born soccer legend and ambassador for the VW Train 4 Life initiative, expressed his pride in the program’s achievements. “It’s incredible to see how much these young girls have gained from this program. The opportunity they’ve had to learn valuable life skills through sport is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will stay with them forever. Volkswagen has truly created something special here, and I feel honoured to be part of it,” he stated.
In recognition of their impressive performance, Fedilitas Secondary School was awarded soccer training kits and essential equipment. Additionally, all participating students from the top four schools—Fedilitas, Fons Luminus, DiepDale, and Madibane Secondary Schools—received new soccer boots, generously sponsored by Volkswagen. This initiative not only celebrates their hard work but also ensures they have the necessary tools to continue developing their skills.
Bridget Harper, Head of Marketing for Volkswagen Passenger Cars, emphasized the company’s commitment to empowering young women in South Africa. “It’s been a privilege to witness firsthand the positive impact that VW Train 4 Life has had on these young women. We are dedicated to equipping them with the tools, skills, and inspiration they need to dream big and realize their ambitions,” she remarked.
The initiative also introduced a mentorship program this year, identifying four outstanding learners for special guidance. Matsie Semela Happy, Mooch Karabo Zinhle, Keitumetse Mochadibane, and Mpho Khuthpma will be mentored by notable Sowetans, including Lerato Phago, a SuperSport Football Broadcaster, and Xoli Zondo, a 5FM Sports presenter. Both mentors bring invaluable insights, having navigated similar paths to success. These young women will also participate in a training program alongside the University of Johannesburg’s 1st Team Ladies Soccer Team, ensuring a blend of fitness development and professional mentorship.
Lerato Phago expressed her enthusiasm for the role, saying, “I am so honoured to mentor these young girls. I understand how important it is for them to have someone believe in their dreams. This opportunity to guide them and help build their confidence is truly a privilege.”
Desiree Ellis, the coach of the South African National Women’s Team, underscored the program’s significance. “For these girls to have access to a program like VW Train 4 Life is fantastic. It not only helps them grow as soccer players but also empowers them as individuals with dreams and ambitions. I’m proud to see the difference it’s making in their lives.”
Harper concluded, “Volkswagen remains committed to empowering young girls in our communities. Through initiatives like VW Train 4 Life, we aim to inspire and foster personal growth by combining sports, education, and life skills. The addition of the mentorship program this year is a thrilling step towards helping talented young girls achieve their dreams.”
As the tournament concluded, it became evident that the VW Train 4 Life initiative is not just about soccer; it’s about creating opportunities, building confidence, and inspiring the next generation of female leaders. The success of this year’s tournament is a testament to the power of sport as a vehicle for change and empowerment in South Africa.
