Volkswagen continues to reinforce its position as a global automotive powerhouse, navigating turbulent times while delivering remarkable results. With approximately 4.8 million vehicles delivered worldwide in 2024, the brand demonstrates its ability to adapt to shifting economic landscapes, emerging customer preferences, and intense global competition.
Despite a modest year-on-year dip of 1.4%, Volkswagen remains the undisputed market leader in Germany and Europe, while also achieving significant growth in North and South America. This performance underscores the brand’s resilience and its commitment to innovation across diverse drive systems, from internal combustion engines to battery electric vehicles (BEVs).
Meeting Global Demand with a Versatile Model Portfolio
Volkswagen’s strength lies in its comprehensive model portfolio, designed to meet the diverse needs of its global customer base. Martin Sander, Volkswagen Board Member for Sales, Marketing, and Aftersales, reflects on 2024 as a year of challenges but also optimism:
“We are meeting the needs of a wide variety of customer groups with our extensive, diverse model range that covers all drive types.”
This versatility is particularly evident in Volkswagen’s success with BEVs. Since the launch of the all-electric ID. family in 2019, over 1.35 million units have been sold globally, including an impressive 500,000 units of the ID.3. In 2024 alone, Volkswagen delivered 383,100 BEVs, solidifying its position as a leader in the electric mobility space.
Dominance in Germany and Europe
Volkswagen maintained its commanding presence in Germany with a market share of 19.1%, according to the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA). This leadership extends to the BEV segment, where Volkswagen vehicles represented 16.3% of new registrations, marking a 2.8-percentage-point increase over 2023.
Volkswagen’s stronghold in Europe is reflected in its diverse lineup, with five models – the Golf, T-Roc, Tiguan, Passat, and Polo – consistently ranking among the top 10 most popular vehicles.

Accelerated Growth in the Americas
Volkswagen’s strategic focus on North and South America has yielded impressive results. The brand recorded a 21.1% increase in deliveries in South America, totaling 479,400 vehicles, while North America saw an 18.4% rise with 592,300 units delivered.
The SUV segment has been a key driver of growth, with SUVs now accounting for 47% of Volkswagen’s global deliveries. The enduring popularity of the Tiguan and the T-Roc, which has surpassed two million units sold since its debut, underscores the brand’s ability to cater to evolving consumer preferences.
Looking Ahead: The Next Generation of Icons
Volkswagen’s roadmap promises an exciting future for its customers. The next generation of the T-Roc, a cornerstone of Volkswagen’s SUV lineup, is set to arrive in 2025, building on its proven appeal as a compact crossover.
Meanwhile, the Polo, a global favorite since its debut 50 years ago, continues to capture hearts. With over 20 million units sold worldwide, the Polo achieved record-breaking success in Brazil, where 172,510 units were delivered in 2024 alone.
A Vision Rooted in Innovation
Volkswagen’s performance in 2024 reflects more than resilience; it highlights the brand’s commitment to meeting the moment with innovation and versatility. From leading the charge in electric mobility to celebrating milestones like the Polo’s 50th anniversary, Volkswagen continues to solidify its legacy as a pioneer in the global automotive industry.
As the brand looks ahead to 2025 and beyond, it remains steadfast in its mission to deliver cutting-edge mobility solutions that cater to a broad spectrum of customer needs, ensuring its position as a leader in both traditional and electric vehicles.
