Gqeberha, 1 December 2025 – Volkswagen Group Africa (VWGA) employees and their loved ones rolled up their sleeves on Saturday, 29 November, to support the restoration and protection of the Baakens Valley Nature Reserve, underscoring the company’s commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement.
Stretching along approximately 23 km of the Baakens River and covering roughly 500 hectares, Baakens Valley is a unique ecological haven where five distinct biomes converge. This rich biodiversity hotspot serves as a sanctuary for indigenous flora and fauna, while also acting as a vital “green lung” for the city of Gqeberha.
A team of 150 VWGA employees and family members worked collaboratively to remove invasive alien plant species, apply herbicide where necessary, stack cleared trees, repaint storage units, and create murals that celebrate the area’s natural beauty. Their efforts are part of the company’s Show of Hands volunteer programme, which takes place twice a year and alternates between community upliftment and environmental conservation initiatives.

“As a company, we believe in preserving green spaces for future generations,” said Martina Biene, VWGA Chairperson and Managing Director. “The Baakens Valley Nature Reserve is crucial for supporting biodiversity, improving air quality, and providing a natural buffer within an urban landscape. We are proud that our employees and their families could come together to make a tangible difference in restoring its ecological integrity.”
The initiative exemplifies VWGA’s ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility and the power of collective action, fostering a deeper connection between employees, their families, and the natural spaces that enrich their communities.
