In July 2024, Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) maintained its position as a leader in the local automotive market, achieving impressive sales figures across various segments. With a total of 11,131 vehicles sold, TSAM’s performance underscores its strong market presence and customer loyalty. This article delves into the specifics of TSAM’s sales achievements, highlights key models, and examines the overall market trends for the month.

Hilux Dominates Sales
The Toyota Hilux once again proved its dominance in the South African automotive market, leading TSAM’s monthly sales with a total of 3,021 units sold. This substantial figure reflects the Hilux’s continued popularity and its significant role in TSAM’s light commercial vehicle (LCV) segment, where it contributed 3,998 units out of the total LCV sales.

Passenger Vehicle Highlights
On the passenger vehicle front, the locally manufactured Corolla Cross emerged as a key player, registering 1,547 units sold. This was a notable achievement, demonstrating the Corolla Cross’s strong appeal among South African consumers. The compact quartet, consisting of the Vitz (864 units), Urban Cruiser (635 units), Starlet (1,222 units), and the newly launched Started Cross (590 units), collectively contributed 3,311 units to TSAM’s passenger vehicle sales.

The Toyota Fortuner, renowned as South Africa’s most popular SUV, also made a significant impact with 727 units sold, further cementing Toyota’s strong position in the SUV market.

Land Cruiser and Luxury Models
The Land Cruiser brand continued to perform well, with the new Prado accounting for 238 units in its second month of availability. The Land Cruiser 300 contributed 113 units, while the Land Cruiser 76 Station Wagon added 25 units to the total.

On the luxury front, Lexus saw a notable increase in sales with a total of 78 units sold. The NX model led the charge with 41 units, reflecting its strong market position. The LX and RX models also contributed to the luxury segment’s success, with 17 and 13 units sold, respectively. Lexus’s commitment to new energy vehicles is evident, with all models—except the LX—offered in hybrid or plug-in hybrid variants.

Commercial Vehicle Sales
In the Medium Commercial Vehicles segment, Toyota achieved respectable figures with 161 units sold. Of these, 96 units were Hino 300-Series models, and 43 units were Toyota Coaster models. The Heavy Commercial Vehicles segment saw Toyota registering 79 units of the Hino 500-Series, while the Extra Heavy Commercial Vehicles segment included 41 Hino units (25 of which were 700-Series and 16 were 500-Series).

Market Trends and Insights
According to naamsa | The Automotive Business Council, the total new vehicle sales for July 2024 reached 44,229 units, marking a 1.5% increase from July 2023. Specifically, new passenger car sales totaled 29,934 units, representing a 6.8% increase from the previous year. Car rental sales accounted for 17.1% of new passenger vehicle sales during the month, highlighting the significant role of rental companies in the market.

Parts Supply and Customer Appreciation
The Toyota Africa Parts Centre (TAPC) played a crucial role in supporting the market, supplying over 1.5 million parts to the domestic market and an additional 337,528 parts for export. TSAM’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Leon Theron, expressed gratitude for the continued support from customers, staff, dealers, fleet owners, and rental companies. He acknowledged the loyalty and dedication that have contributed to achieving these outstanding results, even in challenging economic conditions.

July 2024 has been a remarkable month for Toyota South Africa Motors, with strong performances across various vehicle segments. The Hilux’s dominance, the Corolla Cross’s success, and the impressive figures in both luxury and commercial vehicles reflect TSAM’s robust market position and commitment to delivering quality vehicles. As TSAM continues to navigate the evolving automotive landscape, its strong sales figures and customer loyalty position it well for future success.
