The INGCO Parys 400 and INGCO Vaal 400 provided an electrifying showcase of skill and tenacity from Toyota Gazoo Racing South Africa (TGRSA), as the team continued to assert their dominance in the 2024 South African Rally-Raid Championship (SARRC).
INGCO Parys 400: A Test of Grit and Precision
The weekend’s action kicked off with the INGCO Parys 400, a demanding event that pushed the teams to their limits. The race began under frigid conditions at -6°C, with temperatures climbing to a more manageable mid-twenties as the day progressed. However, the lack of wind meant that dust remained a significant challenge, affecting visibility for many competitors.
Despite a rocky start in the Castrol Qualifying Race, Guy Botterill and Dennis Murphy demonstrated exceptional resilience and driving prowess. Starting from 19th position, they navigated through the dust and competition to secure their first victory of the season with a total time of 05:04:08. Their ability to adapt and excel under challenging conditions underscored their determination and skill.
Henk Lategan and Brett Cummings also impressed with a strong performance, finishing just 118 seconds behind their teammates in second place. Completing the TGRSA clean sweep, Giniel de Villiers and Elvéne Vonk secured third place, finishing only 21 seconds behind Lategan/Cummings. This podium lockout showcased TGRSA’s dominance and the strength of their team.
Saood Variawa and Francois Cazalet, who have been steadily improving, managed a commendable fifth place, hinting at future successes.
INGCO Vaal 400: A Tactical Triumph
The following day brought the INGCO Vaal 400, an event characterized by an even more technical route and persistent dust. The cool start quickly gave way to high twenties temperatures, with the dust becoming a significant obstacle as the day wore on.
In a remarkable display of skill, Henk Lategan and Brett Cummings emerged victorious once again, finishing with a time of 05:39:17. Their ability to navigate the tricky conditions and maintain top speed while opening the road highlighted their mastery of the sport.
Guy Botterill and Dennis Murphy continued their strong form with a second-place finish, just 78 seconds behind the winners. Neil Woolridge Motorsport’s Lance Woolridge and Kenneth Gilbert completed the podium, finishing a narrow one second behind Botterill and Murphy. Saood Variawa and Francois Cazalet achieved another fifth-place finish, showcasing their consistent improvement, while Giniel de Villiers and Elvéne Vonk settled for sixth after a challenging day.
A Weekend of Triumph
The back-to-back victories at the INGCO Parys 400 and INGCO Vaal 400 have cemented TGRSA’s position at the top of the championship standings. Henk Lategan and Brett Cummings have strengthened their lead, while Guy Botterill and Dennis Murphy’s impressive performances have positioned them as serious contenders as the season progresses.
The performance of the four GR Hilux T1+ vehicles was exemplary throughout the weekend, highlighting their reliability and quality. TGRSA Team Principal Shameer Variawa expressed his pride in the team, praising their resilience and teamwork.
