The September new car results reveal a notable surge in electric vehicle (EV) sales, marking a significant milestone in the UK automotive industry. EVs captured over 20% of the market share during this critical plate-change month, a development that reflects the growing consumer interest in zero-emission vehicles. However, despite this promising growth, Ian Plummer, Commercial Director at Auto Trader, cautions that it may not be enough for manufacturers to meet their targets under the upcoming Zero Emissions Vehicle (ZEV) mandate.

Plummer highlights that the driving force behind this EV sales boost is largely attributed to record-breaking discounts. “Brands and retailers are pulling out all the stops to stimulate sales,” he explains, emphasizing the critical role of financial incentives in bolstering the EV market. The discounting trend underlines a key issue: the EV market remains highly price-sensitive. The financial barrier posed by the higher cost of electric cars compared to internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles continues to deter a wider demographic from making the switch, even as interest grows.

Auto Trader’s platform has seen the strongest level of interest in new EVs in more than two years, a positive indicator that this surge in demand may carry through the final months of 2024. Plummer sees this as a sign of resilience and potential for the EV market, yet he underscores the need for sustainable growth beyond temporary sales spikes. “Discounts can only last so long,” he warns, noting that while these financial incentives are effective in the short term, they are not a viable long-term strategy for boosting EV adoption.

Affordability remains a central issue. Despite an influx of more affordable electric models from both established automakers and new entrants, EVs still carry a 30% price premium over their ICE counterparts. This pricing gap makes it difficult for the average buyer to consider an electric vehicle without substantial discounts or other incentives.

Plummer calls for further government intervention to bridge this affordability gap. While the market is witnessing a steady introduction of lower-cost EVs, achieving the regulatory targets of the ZEV mandate without damaging the broader automotive industry will require more than just manufacturer-led efforts. “We need to see further levels of support from Government,” he asserts. The push for EV adoption must be met with policies and programs that make the transition more financially accessible to consumers, whether through tax breaks, subsidies, or continued investments in charging infrastructure.

As the UK marches towards its 2030 ban on new petrol and diesel cars, the pressure is on both the industry and the government to ensure that EVs not only capture market share but also become a viable option for all consumers. The surge in September’s EV sales is certainly a promising step forward, but without more robust, long-term solutions to the affordability problem, the road to mass electric adoption may still be fraught with challenges.
