Coventry, UK, 15 May 2024 – Today marks the launch of Volklec, a new UK-based company specializing in the production of batteries for electric vehicles. Situated in Coventry, the hub of the UK’s automotive industry, Volklec is driven by the mission of “Powering Electrified Mobility.” The company aims to produce sustainable batteries for a range of vehicles, including on-road, off-highway, and track vehicles.

Backed by the UK-based investment firm Frontive Group, Volklec represents a substantial investment in Coventry’s engineering and manufacturing sectors. The company’s batteries will be developed at the UK Battery Industrialisation Centre (UKBIC), a national facility focused on scaling up manufacturing capabilities and advancing the skills needed for the EV battery sector.

In collaboration with UKBIC, Volklec is set to create batteries tailored to the needs of the UK automotive market, particularly catering to small volume and niche vehicle manufacturers. This partnership is crucial in the roadmap towards giga-scale production, offering a swift path from product development to large-scale manufacturing. This initiative is expected to generate jobs in the West Midlands and bolster the UK’s battery research, development, and manufacturing prowess.

“Volklec has been months in the making, with significant investment aimed at supporting the UK’s decarbonisation efforts,” said Imran Khatri, Founder of Volklec. “We are proud to contribute to the UK’s automotive industry, ensuring a secure supply chain. Our initial focus is on this sector, but we plan to expand into broader electrification markets in the future.”

Sean Gilgunn, Managing Director of UKBIC, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We are thrilled to welcome Volklec to UKBIC. Our facility is designed to help businesses develop and scale their battery manufacturing processes. This partnership marks the beginning of Volklec’s journey towards large-scale battery production, which is essential for the UK’s transition to Net Zero. The agreement underscores the critical role UKBIC plays in the battery ecosystem.”

Volklec’s launch is a significant step towards enhancing the UK’s capability in battery manufacturing, contributing to the broader goals of sustainability and economic growth.
