Friday, 28 November 2025 — The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has announced that Paul Philpott, President and CEO of Kia UK, will serve as its 84th President, taking office from 1 January 2026. The appointment was confirmed at the organisation’s 108th Annual Dinner in London, where industry colleagues also paid tribute to outgoing President Mick Flanagan, Vice President for Adient, who steps down after completing his two-year tenure.

Philpott’s presidency comes at a pivotal moment for the UK automotive sector, as the industry continues its transition toward zero-emission mobility, adapts to evolving legislative frameworks and welcomes new entrants into an increasingly competitive market.

A Career Defined by Leadership and Transformation

With a career spanning nearly four decades, Paul Philpott brings a wealth of experience and proven leadership to the role. After graduating with a degree in Banking and Finance from Loughborough University, he entered the automotive world through Ford of Britain, rising steadily before joining Toyota GB, where he became a director at just 34 years old.

In 2007, Philpott joined Kia UK as Managing Director, helping lay the foundations for one of the industry’s most remarkable success stories. His work in guiding Kia through a period of sustained growth led to his appointment as Chief Operating Officer for Kia Europe in Frankfurt, where he oversaw operations across the continent.

Returning to the UK in 2021, Philpott became the first non-Korean President and CEO of an international Kia subsidiary. Under his leadership, the brand has accelerated its transition to zero-emission vehicles, expanded into commercial segments and strengthened its position as a major force in UK automotive retail.

Philpott: “A Defining Moment for Our Industry”

Reflecting on his appointment, Paul Philpott said:

*“It is with great honour and privilege that I accept this appointment, and I would like to thank and congratulate Mick Flanagan for his outstanding support and leadership over the past two years. Our industry is one we are all proud to serve, and I believe our greatest strength lies not only in our ambition, but in our ability to adapt and change: we are transitioning toward zero-emission goals, navigating complex legislative measures and welcoming new brands into the UK market.

There has never been a more important time to stand together, and I look forward to supporting this with SMMT. I am proud to take on this responsibility at such a defining moment for our industry, and I am committed to working with all stakeholders to secure a sustainable and successful future for UK Automotive.”*

SMMT Welcomes a Steady Hand for a Transformative Era

SMMT Chief Executive Mike Hawes welcomed the appointment, emphasising Philpott’s deep understanding of the sector.

*“We are delighted to welcome Paul Philpott as SMMT’s 84th President. Paul brings vast experience and a deep understanding of the sector that will be invaluable during a period of significant transformation and uncertainty.

I would also like to express our gratitude to outgoing president Mick Flanagan for his exceptional service. Mick has been a steadfast advocate for the UK automotive industry and SMMT, and his contribution has strengthened our sector and set a strong foundation for the future.”*

The Engine of the UK Economy

The announcement comes as the automotive industry continues to play a crucial role in the UK’s economic and industrial landscape. The sector contributes:

  • £92 billion in turnover annually
  • £25 billion in value added
  • £5 billion in R&D investment
  • 183,000 direct manufacturing jobs and 796,000 roles across the wider industry
  • 13.4% of total UK goods exports, with vehicles shipped to more than 140 markets worldwide
  • £108 billion in automotive imports and exports

The UK is one of the few global markets that manufactures nearly every type of vehicle, from passenger cars to buses, trucks, taxis, specialist machines and off-highway vehicles. More than 2,500 component suppliers, high-value engineering roles and a vibrant aftermarket further strengthen the industry’s contribution, extending its influence across sectors such as chemicals, logistics, advertising, steel and finance.

A Presidency Shaped by Opportunity and Change

As the UK automotive sector navigates one of the most transformative periods in its history—from electrification to new manufacturing technologies and shifting global trade dynamics—Paul Philpott’s appointment signals confidence, continuity and clear strategic focus.

With a legacy of brand-building, operational excellence and forward-thinking leadership, Philpott is well positioned to guide the SMMT and the wider industry through its next chapter.
