ISUZU Motors South Africa has recently launched its all-new ISUZU D-MAX bakkie, featuring higher levels of quality, technology, efficiency, and refinement. With a range of 24 models, including Single Cab, Extended Cab, and Double Cab with two engine options, five specification levels, manual and automatic transmissions, and in 4×2 or 4×4 configuration, the ISUZU D-MAX is the perfect all-in-one vehicle for work and leisure.
The R1.2 billion investment in Isuzu’s local operations, announced in 2019, has produced the seventh generation of ISUZU bakkies to be manufactured in Gqeberha over the past 42 years. The vehicle is produced for the South African market and exported to 25 African markets, both left and right-hand drive. The new ISUZU D-MAX features a fresh and sporty design, including a modern interpretation of established ISUZU D-MAX design cues, Bi-LED projector headlamps, and LED daytime running lights on high-series models. The vehicle is also more spacious in all key areas, with improved ingress and egress, and an enhanced loadbox design that provides additional loading space and capacity.
ISUZU D-MAX Bakkie Design and styling
The all-new ISUZU D-MAX boasts a rugged yet modern and refined look, with a fresh and more aggressive front fascia and grille that is centred around a modern interpretation of the established ISUZU D-MAX design cues. The slimmer and more angular lights, including Bi-LED projector headlamps and LED daytime running lights on high-series models, give the new ISUZU D-MAX distinctive on-road presence. LED edge lighting for the turn indicators on the mirror housings, crisp new LED combination tail lamps, and an integrated LED high-mount brake light at the rear continue the contemporary theme.
The enhanced sense of quality and attention to detail in the design is highlighted with the minimised panel gaps between the doors and between the cabin and cargo box. The integrated two-step rear bumper is seamlessly incorporated into the sleek and sophisticated lines of the new ISUZU D-MAX.
The new ISUZU D-MAX is bigger and more spacious in all key areas, except for the roofline which is 10 mm lower than the previous model. The bonnet and load area have been heightened by 15 mm and 30 mm, respectively, while the wheelbase has been extended by 30 mm for greater optimisation of the cabin structure.
Everyday comfort and convenience have been enhanced with longer front doors for Single Cab and Extended Cab models and a new longer rear door for the Double Cab, which is versatile and family-oriented. The B-pillar has been moved 25mm forward to improve access for rear-seat occupants. The new design ensures that the ISUZU D-MAX provides easier ingress and egress, matched to increased passenger space and legroom.
The new loadbox design has released additional loading space and capacity, with up to 15 mm added to the bed floor length and an extra 30 mm in depth for the box sides. The tailgate is 1 530 mm wide, offering easy loading of wide objects for added convenience and versatility.
ISUZU D-MAX Interior features
The new ISUZU D-MAX boasts a luxurious and sophisticated cabin with a premium quality feel in its high series models. The dashboard features a simplified layout with controls and switches conveniently positioned within reach, while the use of soft-touch materials, layered and textured surfaces, and sharp graphics add a tactile and refined feel throughout the interior.
Passengers also benefit from increased legroom, 20 mm more shoulder room, and an increased backrest rake for greater comfort. The driving position is now more car-like thanks to the smaller-diameter steering wheel with telescopic adjustment, and an increased range of seat adjustment.
The instrument binnacle features analogue dials for the rev counter and speedometer, complemented by a high-resolution 4.2-inch LCD multi-information display that provides access to a wide range of functions.
The centre stack features a fully integrated Wide Extended Graphic Array (WXGA) display infotainment system in 7-inch or 9-inch versions, depending on the model. The system is touch screen activated and includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for seamless smartphone integration.
The LSE and V-CROSS models come equipped with dual-zone climate control with rear vents on the Double Cabs, ensuring supreme comfort for all passengers, while lower derivatives feature manual air-conditioning.
New ISUZU D-MAX model
The new ISUZU D-MAX models boast advanced technology and comprehensive safety features that come standard. Anti-lock Brakes (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), and Brake Assist (BAS) are included in all models, along with Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with Traction Control, Hill Start Assist (HSA), Hill Descent Control (HDC), and Trailer Sway Control.
The range-topping V-CROSS model takes safety to the next level with its Intelligent Driver Assist System (IDAS), which includes a comprehensive suite of active and passive safety features. It comprises advanced features such as Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS), Lane Departure Prevention (LDP), and Lane Keep Assist System (LKAS), Blind Spot Monitor (BSM), Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Parking Aid (front and rear), and Multi Collision Brake (MCB), which automatically applies the brakes when the airbags are deployed.
Passive Entry & Start System (PESS) is standard on LSE and V-CROSS models, enabling keyless unlocking and push-button start functionality. The system also permits remote engine start (on automatic models) from the key fob within a 20-meter range of the vehicle. Additionally, the system includes an automatic locking function when walking away from the vehicle with the key.
In the event of a collision, the ISUZU D-MAX is equipped with up to eight airbags, depending on the specification level. Dual front passenger airbags, roof rail (curtain) airbags, seat side airbags, and a driver’s knee airbag are included in all models, while far-side airbags are available in top V-CROSS models for additional head protection between front seat occupants.
ISUZU D-MAX Power and performance
The new ISUZU D-MAX range offers two diesel engine options, known for their durability, reliability and efficiency. The 1.9-litre Ddi engine, standard on all Single Cab models and available on Extended Cab and Double Cab models, uses common rail direct injection to produce a maximum power output of 110 kW at 3 600 r/min and a peak torque of 350 Nm between 1 800 to 2 600 r/min, providing excellent fuel economy and low running costs.
The upgraded 3.0 Ddi engine, available on mid to high-series Extended Cab and Double Cab models, has been optimized for more torque at lower engine speeds, superior pull-off and acceleration, reduced noise levels, and better consumption. The latest version of the 3.0-litre engine delivers 140 kW of peak power at 3 600 r/min and a maximum torque of 450 Nm available from 1 600 to 2 600 r/min. A six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission is available, with the automatic version featuring a sequential sport mode that allows the driver to select a specific gear manually. The D-MAX is available in 4×2 and 4×4 across all body styles.
ISUZU D-MAX Specification levels
To cater to various needs and applications, the D-MAX model offers five specification levels ranging from the entry-level Standard to the upmarket V-CROSS. Even the Standard model comes with a comprehensive list of standard features such as an AM/FM radio, Bluetooth, air conditioning, an immobilizer, and safety features like airbags, ABS, EBD, and brake assist. The L specification level adds an anti-theft alarm, power windows, and satellite audio controls. LS models come with 17-inch alloy wheels, a 7-inch infotainment screen, a rearview camera, halogen daytime running lights, and a black side step.
The LSE model features 18-inch alloy wheels, a 9-inch infotainment screen, a passive entry start system, LED head and taillamps, front and rear park assist, roof rails, and a chrome tubular sports bar. The V-CROSS model boasts leather seats with eight-way power adjustment, Isuzu’s Advanced Driver Assist System, eight airbags, automatic high beam activation, and gun metallic finishes for the grille, fender flares, door handles, mirror caps, roof rails, and the distinctive hooped sports bar.
The ISUZU D-MAX range at a glance
The ISUZU D-MAX range offers a variety of models to suit different needs in the LCV market. The range includes five Single Cab models with the 1.9 Ddi engine, available in Standard and L specification levels, and two 4×4 models. The Extended Cab is available in six derivatives, with Standard and LS spec models paired with the 1.9 Ddi engine, while LSE models are paired with the 3.0 Ddi engine and automatic transmission, in 4×2 or 4×4.
The Double Cab range offers 11 models covering all specification grades, with five models featuring the 1.9-litre engine in L and LS models, available in manual or auto, and two or four-wheel drive. LS, LSE or V-CROSS specification levels are available with the 3.0 Ddi engine. LS models are available in manual, while the rest are equipped with the six-speed automatic and either 4×2 or 4×4 drivetrains. A Chassis Cab derivative is also available for commercial customers.

ISUZU Complete Care comes standard with every new ISUZU D-MAX and embodies Isuzu’s unwavering commitment to aftersales service and customer satisfaction. All new ISUZU D-MAX models are sold as standard with a comprehensive five-year/120 000 km warranty and roadside assistance, as well as a five-year unlimited distance anti-corrosion warranty.
In addition, a five-year/90 000 km service plan is included in the purchase price, with service intervals scheduled every 15 000 km or annually, whichever comes first.
Through ISUZU Mobility, customers have the option of extending the standard service plan up to a maximum of six years or 200 000 km. Alternatively, the service plan can be upgraded to a full maintenance plan that covers the vehicle for planned and unplanned maintenance up to six years/200 000 km.
