Hyundai Ioniq 5 N Shines At Pikes Peak With Historic Wins

SEOUL, June 24, 2024 – Hyundai Motor Company achieved remarkable success at the Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC) on June 23, setting new benchmarks in the Electric Modified and Production SUV/Crossover categories with its IONIQ 5 N models. This achievement reaffirms Hyundai’s leadership in high-performance electric vehicles (EVs) and its commitment to pushing the boundaries of automotive innovation.

Hyundai Motor entered the prestigious PPIHC with three formidable contenders: two IONIQ 5 N TA (Time Attack) Specs and one production IONIQ 5 N. Negotiating a grueling 12.42-mile (20 km) course that climbs over 4,700 feet (1,438 meters) to the summit of Pikes Peak, these vehicles tackled 156 turns amid challenging high-altitude conditions and unpredictable weather.

Leading the charge was the IONIQ 5 N TA Spec driven by Hyundai World Rally driver Dani Sordo, who set a blistering pace with a record-breaking time of 09:30.852, securing victory in the exhibition class. Randy Pobst, driving the second TA Spec, also delivered an impressive performance, crossing the finish line in 09:55.551.

Notably, the IONIQ 5 N TA Spec showcased the formidable capabilities of Hyundai’s production-spec IONIQ 5 N with minimal modifications. Apart from strategic software enhancements to maximize motor output and select performance upgrades such as motorsport-spec brakes and slick tires, the TA Spec remains true to the core features offered to customers.

In the production category, Ron Zaras, a PPIHC rookie and automotive media personality, piloted the IONIQ 5 N production model to a commendable time of 10:49.267, highlighting its stock prowess without modifications.

Till Wartenberg, Vice President and Head of N Brand and Motorsport at Hyundai Motor Company, expressed his excitement about the record-setting performance: “We are thrilled with our success at Pikes Peak and our overall performance. Moving forward, we aim to leverage motorsports platforms like Pikes Peak to showcase the exceptional performance of our mass-produced vehicles and continue advancing technology that not only meets but exceeds customer expectations.”

The outstanding achievements at Pikes Peak underscore Hyundai N’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of EV technology and expanding the realm of high-performance electric vehicles. Beyond the IONIQ 5 N production model, Hyundai N continues to innovate with specialized variants like the IONIQ 5 N eN1 Cup Car and the IONIQ 5 N TA Spec, ensuring a dynamic future for EV motorsports.

Joon Park, Vice President and Head of N Brand Management Group, reflected on the accomplishment: “This year’s Pikes Peak result is a testament to the dedication and innovation of the Hyundai N team. We have realized a vision for high-performance EVs that challenges conventions and excels even in the most demanding hill climb race globally.”

Hyundai Motor’s history at Pikes Peak dates back to 1992, and this latest triumph joins significant milestones such as Rod Millen’s victory in the 2-Wheel Drive Showroom Stock division with a Hyundai Scoupe. In 2012, Rhys Millen set a course record of 9:46.164 in a Hyundai Genesis Coupe, further solidifying Hyundai’s legacy in motorsports.
