Hyundai Automotive South Africa Champions Youth Hockey Development At Sahns Festival

Johannesburg, 22 March 2025 – South African hockey continues to navigate challenges such as financial constraints, limited exposure, and the struggle to secure corporate sponsorships. While ongoing transformation and development initiatives aim to improve inclusivity and representation, the sport still requires significant support to thrive at both grassroots and professional levels.

Against this backdrop, Hyundai Automotive South Africa has reaffirmed its commitment to youth sports development by sponsoring the Hyundai U16 St Andrews Hockey, Netball, and Squash (SAHNS) Festival. Taking place from 21-23 March 2025 at St Andrew’s School for Girls in Germiston, the festival has become a key fixture in Gauteng’s sporting calendar. This marks the fourth consecutive year of Hyundai’s sponsorship, reinforcing the company’s dedication to fostering young talent.

“This festival attracts a number of talented, young and aspirant hockey players. As Hyundai Automotive South Africa, we believe that by supporting such events, we can contribute to harnessing and nurturing their talents,” says Gideon Jansen van Rensburg, CEO of Hyundai Automotive South Africa. “Some of South Africa’s leading hockey coaches will be in attendance, offering participants the opportunity to impress national selectors. Furthermore, we aim to provide a platform for underprivileged schools and clubs that have shown an interest in the sport but have struggled to secure sponsorships.”

Hyundai Hockey Gear Donation Drive: Supporting Future Stars

As part of its broader commitment to community upliftment and the growth of hockey in South Africa, Hyundai Automotive South Africa has introduced the Hyundai Hockey Gear Donation Drive. This initiative encourages donations of pre-loved hockey equipment, including sticks, shoes, shin pads, and stick bags, to support underprivileged schools and clubs in Gauteng.

“The campaign has already commenced and will run until 31 May 2025. We are heartened by the enthusiastic response so far and extend our appreciation for all the donations received,” adds Jansen van Rensburg. “We believe that this initiative will go a long way in fostering interest and participation in hockey among underprivileged schools and clubs.”

Donation drop-off points have been set up at Hyundai dealerships across Gauteng, as well as at St Andrew’s School for Girls, making it convenient for members of the public to contribute to the cause.

A Weekend of Thrilling Performances

Hockey is one of South Africa’s fastest-growing and most beloved sports, and this weekend’s SAHNS Festival has once again showcased some of the country’s most promising young talent. With intense competition and outstanding performances, the event continues to provide a valuable platform for emerging athletes to develop their skills and gain crucial exposure.

Through its sustained investment in grassroots sport, Hyundai Automotive South Africa is not only fostering the development of young athletes but also contributing to the broader transformation and inclusivity of hockey in the country. As the festival concludes, the impact of such initiatives will undoubtedly resonate well beyond the final whistle, shaping the future of South African hockey for years to come.
