In an exciting new chapter for Hyundai Automotive South Africa (SA) and the Sunshine Tour, Hyundai has solidified its commitment to golf by becoming a full tournament name sponsor. This step marks a significant evolution in their partnership, with Hyundai now the official sponsor of the Hyundai Open. Set to take place at the prestigious Royal Johannesburg East Course in February 2025, the tournament will offer a generous prize pool of R2 million, attracting top talent and spotlighting Hyundai’s brand at one of South Africa’s premier golfing events.

Hyundai’s increasing involvement with the Sunshine Tour reflects a strategic move to strengthen its brand among South Africa’s upscale, sports-oriented market. Hyundai, now in its third year as a partner with the Sunshine Tour, previously focused on logistics support, supplying STARIA buses and luxury SUVs for player and executive transport. Additionally, Hyundai awarded year-long vehicle loans to the top three players in the Tour’s Order of Merit and a Sunshine Tour executive, a program that underscored its ongoing commitment to South Africa’s professional golfing circuit.

This growing presence has yielded significant results, prompting Hyundai’s decision to become a full tournament sponsor. “When active golfers were asked which car brand they own or drive most often, 6% of them indicated that they own or drive a Hyundai most often, and 30% indicated that an SUV is the type of vehicle that they drive most often,” explained Gideon Jansen van Rensburg, CEO of Hyundai Automotive South Africa. “Furthermore, research has shown that brand sponsorships in sporting events rank third on the list of most trusted advertising channels.” This data bolstered Hyundai’s decision to deepen its ties with the Sunshine Tour, a relationship ideally suited to the brand’s focus on high-quality SUVs, including the Tucson, Santa Fe, and Palisade.

The Sunshine Tour events provide Hyundai with a valuable platform to connect with affluent, lifestyle-oriented customers, many of whom view golf as both a social activity and a status symbol. Hyundai’s sponsorship reaches these audiences through several touchpoints, including pro-am events, VIP hospitality, and Partner Connect days. These engagements allow Hyundai to showcase its vehicles in a hands-on environment, building relationships with potential buyers.

“Aligning with the Sunshine Tour allows Hyundai to connect with specific demographics, making this collaboration an effective tool to grow the brand’s market share,” added Jansen van Rensburg. By creating experiences that let people “touch, feel, and experience the Hyundai brand,” Hyundai aims to expand its presence in the lifestyle-driven golf market. The Sunshine Tour, known for attracting a high socio-economic demographic, presents an ideal setting to enhance Hyundai’s brand perception and reach new market segments.

Beyond these engagements, Hyundai has crafted experiential marketing opportunities that are tailored to the luxury expectations of golfing audiences. During VIP events, Hyundai provides premium shuttle services to high-profile attendees, ensuring a seamless and comfortable journey in Hyundai’s luxury models. Hyundai’s Partner Connect days also enable guests to test Hyundai vehicles in real-world settings, offering first-hand experience with the brand’s latest technology and design features.

The second half of the 2024/2025 Sunshine Tour season promises a thrilling lineup for golf enthusiasts, featuring two DP World Tour co-sanctioned tournaments and four European Challenge Tour co-sanctioned events, culminating in the Hyundai Open from February 20–23, 2025. This elevated role in South Africa’s golfing calendar marks a significant step forward for Hyundai Automotive SA, which continues to build meaningful connections with South Africa’s active, affluent market through its dynamic engagement with the Sunshine Tour.

As the Sunshine Tour expands and more South Africans engage with the sport, Hyundai’s partnership with the Tour positions the brand to become a staple name among South Africa’s premium vehicle choices. Through this sponsorship, Hyundai is seizing an opportunity to not only promote its SUVs to a discerning audience but also to reinforce its reputation as a brand that aligns with the active, aspirational lifestyle of golf fans across the country.
