HORSE, a trailblazer in innovative and low-emission powertrain systems, has embarked on a significant Research & Development partnership with WEG, a leading Brazilian electronics manufacturer. This collaboration marks HORSE’s debut under HORSE Powertrain Ltd., aiming to advance the development of their new Range Extender powertrain.

The memorandum of understanding (MOU) solidifies HORSE and WEG’s commitment to jointly develop a cutting-edge Range Extender powertrain tailored for both light commercial and heavy-duty vehicles. Central to this collaboration, WEG will supply critical components including electric generators, e-motors, electrical inverters, and battery packs.

Upon completion of the rigorous R&D phase, HORSE will assume the role of system owner and primary supplier for customers worldwide. This ownership encompasses the electronic architecture integration, incorporating components to meet existing specifications, along with the supply of the 1.0-litre ‘HR10’ engine and Control Module.

Teaming up with WEG, a distinguished provider of electrical technology, underscores our capability to deliver world-class powertrain solutions tailored to diverse global needs and technical standards.”

The Range Extender technology comprises six essential modules:

  • Combustion engine: Generates mechanical energy to power the electric generator.
  • Electric generator: Converts mechanical energy into electric charge for the battery.
  • Electric inverter: Converts direct current to alternating current and facilitates communication between electronic components.
  • Electronic control unit: Provides real-time instructions to vehicle components and electronics.
  • E-motor: Converts battery charge into mechanical traction for vehicle propulsion, and supports regenerative braking.
  • Battery: Stores electrical energy sourced from the generator and e-motor.

This strategic partnership grants HORSE preferential access to critical components necessary for fully integrated Range Extender units, ensuring consistent supply to meet customer demands. Designed to accommodate both light commercial and heavy-duty vehicles, the Range Extender features an optimised battery pack paired with HORSE’s 85kW 1.0-litre, three-cylinder ‘HR10’ engine. Notably, the HR10 engine supports the use of flex fuels, resulting in a total emissions profile comparable to that of fully electric vehicles.

The primary advantage of the Range Extender lies in its ability to maintain the engine within its optimal operating window, thereby minimising fuel consumption and emissions effectively.
