Hino South Africa, marking the first anniversary of its latest 700 Series extra heavy-duty trucks, is ramping up its offerings by delivering new trucks tailored to meet specific operational needs in key market segments. Through its Post Production Operations (PPO) unit, Hino SA now provides customers with specialised equipment installations, ensuring trucks are ready for work upon delivery.
Itumeleng Segage, Hino SA’s General Manager, explains, “The local extra-heavy market is defined by certain specialised applications. We’re now leveraging our PPO unit to oversee the installation of equipment required for these applications, ensuring that our trucks are equipped to perform specific tasks efficiently.”
One of the most notable applications is for side tippers, where Hino SA manages the installation of a power take-off system supplied by ZF. This system enables the integration of hydraulic piping and a fluid tank, ensuring the truck is fully functional for tipping operations before it reaches the customer.
Hino 700 trucks designed for use as fuel or Hazchem tankers also benefit from this proactive approach. The necessary hydraulic pump, piping, and chassis modifications are completed by Hino, leaving the final step of fitting the Hazchem compliance kit, as per regulatory requirements, to the customer.
Originally, Hino targeted its 700 Series at regional haul operators, but the truck’s cost-effectiveness and fuel economy have broadened its appeal, with long-haul operators increasingly choosing Hino over competitors. One key advantage is the absence of AdBlue in the 700 Series, which further lowers operational costs for businesses. However, Segage acknowledges one challenge that long-haul operators face with the truck: “The 700 comes with a single sleeper cab, but many operators use two drivers on these overnight routes.”
In response, Hino SA has developed a local solution — a rooftop sleeper pod incorporated into the truck’s aerodynamic kit. The spacious pod, which includes lighting and two windows, offers comfortable accommodation for a second driver. The design mirrors a concept widely used in Japan, and feedback from South African operators trialling the sleeper pod has been highly positive.
Further customisation options offered through the PPO unit include the fitment of lightweight aluminium alloy rims and aero kits, which help to improve the truck’s overall fuel efficiency. According to Segage, these customisations are not only practical but also preserve the truck’s warranty, providing peace of mind for operators.
By addressing the diverse needs of South Africa’s heavy-duty trucking market, Hino SA is solidifying its position as a leader in delivering versatile, reliable, and economical transport solutions tailored to the unique demands of the region.
