PRETORIA, South Africa, 25 February 2025 – The Ford Ranger has firmly established itself as one of the premier contenders in South Africa’s bakkie segment, celebrated for its unmatched reliability, durability, and quality. At the heart of this legacy lies Ford’s Silverton Manufacturing Plant in Pretoria, one of only five global hubs producing the Ranger. This facility, with its unwavering commitment to precision and excellence, has played an instrumental role in cementing the Ranger’s reputation and transforming Ford into one of the leading automotive brands in South Africa.
A Legacy of Innovation and Quality
The Ford Ranger’s journey in South Africa spans three generations, each marked by continuous innovation and advancement. As a cornerstone of Ford’s local lineup, the Ranger’s success is a testament to both its engineering prowess and the trust it has built with local consumers. In 2024, the Ranger became the top-selling double-cab in South Africa, with an impressive 20,078 units sold, further solidifying its position as the preferred choice for South African drivers.
Since its inception, the Ranger has continually evolved, winning numerous accolades and becoming integral to businesses, communities, and families across South Africa. Its ability to meet the diverse needs of individuals and industries alike has made it a symbol of dependability. Notably, between 2000 and early 2024, over one million Rangers have rolled off the Silverton production line, destined for both the domestic market and global exports. This impressive milestone translates to a Ranger being produced every two minutes, underscoring the scale and efficiency of the operation.
The Six-Step Process: Ensuring Uncompromising Quality
Ford’s commitment to quality is evident in every aspect of the Ranger’s production process. Each Ranger that leaves the Silverton Plant must undergo a rigorous six-step process on the Customer Acceptance Line (CAL) before it is shipped to markets across the globe. This meticulous process ensures that every vehicle meets Ford’s exacting standards, combining state-of-the-art technology with human expertise.
Suresh Babu, Plant Manager at Silverton Vehicle Operations, highlights the importance of this process: “The trained eyes and precise hands of Ford’s Customer Acceptance Line inspectors are essential in ensuring every Ranger meets the highest standards. Their meticulous attention to detail and unwavering commitment to quality provide the final seal of approval before the vehicle reaches its new owner.”

The six-step process includes:
- Dark Room
In this unique inspection, inspectors check head and tail lamps, the instrument cluster, SYNCÒ screen, and interior lighting for brightness and alignment in a completely dark environment. - Hands-On Inspection
Every surface of the Ranger is carefully inspected. Inspectors run their hands across every panel, checking for imperfections and ensuring precise alignment. Buttons, switches, and controls are thoroughly tested. - Systems Check
Comprehensive diagnostic tests ensure that all electrical components are functioning correctly, from lights to sensors. - AI Eyes
Ford’s Mobile Artificial Intelligence Vision System (MAIVS) uses advanced algorithms to detect any flaws on the vehicle’s exterior. This AI-powered system scans for imperfections such as crooked or missing badges, ensuring that every detail is flawless. - Rainstorm Simulation
The Leak Test simulates a torrential downpour, subjecting the Ranger to high-pressure water jets from every angle. Every seal, light, and door is inspected for water tightness. In line with Ford’s sustainability practices, the water used in the test is collected, treated, and reused for future tests. - Squeak-and-Rattle Track
A visit to the Silverton Assembly Plant is not complete without witnessing the Ranger undergo testing on the Squeak-and-Rattle Track. This 320-metre course features surfaces like uneven cobblestones and angled irons, designed to simulate real-world driving conditions. The test ensures there are no unwanted noises, while the suspension and steering are put through their paces to confirm optimal performance.
A Bakkie that Sets the Standard
The Ford Ranger’s success story is not just about meeting the industry’s expectations but setting new benchmarks for quality, comfort, capability, and durability. Its legacy is reinforced by an array of accolades, including the coveted 2023 South African Car of the Year title – a first for any bakkie. This milestone, alongside the many awards the Ranger has received since its launch, highlights the vehicle’s exceptional qualities and its lasting impact on the automotive landscape.
From CAR Magazine’s Best Double Cab Bakkie every year since 2011 to winning the CAR Bakkie Shootout in 2021, the Ranger continues to earn recognition across various platforms. It has also claimed top honors in The Star Readers’ Choice Awards and remains a consistent finalist in the Cars.co.za Consumer Awards, reaffirming its place as one of South Africa’s most trusted and celebrated vehicles.
The Ford Ranger is more than just a vehicle – it’s a symbol of South Africa’s automotive prowess and a testament to Ford’s unwavering commitment to excellence. With its reputation firmly entrenched, the Ranger continues to lead the way, redefining the bakkie segment and exceeding expectations at every turn.
