- Ford LCV sales up 15,1%
- Top 3 passenger car sales position for FMCSA sustained
- Ford Figo firmly in the Top 10
JOHANNESBURG – 02 March 2011 – While Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA) continues to develop and refine its Silverton manufacturing facility for future Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) plans, its current line-up of LCVs were performing strongly in the new vehicle market during February. Ford’s LCV line-up increased sales 15,1% over January.
FMCSA’s strong LCV month was bolstered by yet another Top Three passenger car sales performance. The company’s popular Figo remains firmly planted in the South African industry’s Top 10 sales performers, continuing to endear itself to the country’s buoyant entry-level market.
“February sales showed a continued momentum, despite it being a short selling month,” said FMCSA’s Vice President Marketing, Sales and Service, Dean Stoneley. “Despite the 2011 market returning to some normalcy after potentially skewed January sales, February sales showed just what a strong potential this year’s sales have.”
New vehicle sales for February increased 8,9% to 49,164 units, according to the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of SA (Naamsa). This is 25,2% ahead of February 2010. The total passenger car market rose 31,1% when compared with the same period last year while LCV sales rose more substantially with an increase of 11,3% over February 2010. When compared to January sales, the passenger market was up 3,3% and the LCV market 21,8%.
“We indicated last month that this year’s sales should show tangible growth, a factor reinforced by February sales,” said Stoneley. “Rising oil prices are affecting global exchange rates and South African fuel prices and this will bring some pressure to bear in coming months. But market sentiment looks generally positive.”
