Duncan Vos was born in Barbertonon the 30th November 1960. In his late teens he showed both a keen interest and the promise of real talent in motor sport.
That talent translated into success when Vos was crowned as South African Formula GTI champion in 1993. Following this success he moved on to saloon cars and the popular South African Touring Car series. In 1995 he won the Class B championship in this hotly contested series.
The demise of the popular but hugely expensive touring car championship left a void in circuit racing that forced a number of successful competitors to migrate to non-circuit competition. Vos joined Glyn Hall’s off-road venture together with Giniel de Villiers and went on to win the South African Off-Road championship in 2002.
He followed this up with consecutive championships in the series in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
These multiple championships in different motor sport disciplines mark career highlights for Vos. One regret he has is that his early success came with very few opportunities for South Africans to move into international competition.
In 2010 he joined Hall at Toyota Motorsport and competed with Rob Howie in a V6-engined Castrol Team Toyota Hilux Single Cab in the premier Super Production category. They won round five of the eight-event series, theSun City400, and finished on the podium on three other occasions, including as runners-up in round three, theSugarbelt400.
In 2011 they campaigned a V8-engined Castrol Team Toyota Hilux Double Cab in the premier Production Vehicle class and were runners-up in the championship, winning two of the eight rounds.
He and Howie competed in the 2012 DakarRally in their national championship Hilux, sponsored by Imperial, Duxbury Netgear and the Innovation Group, and finished a remarkable 10th overall in their first attempt at the world’s longest and toughest motor race.
Today, Vos is a benchmark competitor in the ABSA Off-Road Championship in his Castrol Team Toyota Hilux. He and co-driver Rob Howie currently lead the production vehicle category after four rounds from Castrol Toyota team-mates Anthony Taylor and Chris Birkin. They won the last three rounds in succession, including the Toyota 1000 Desert Race in Botswana in June.
Vos runs his own building materials wholesale business. He is married to Ammon and has two sons,Devon(16) and Alex (14). He lists golf, mountain biking and running among his favourite hobbies. When it comes to going out for a meal, a good curry is at the top of his preferences.
