Daimler Truck Southern Africa (DTSA), in a productive alliance with Trucking Wellness, recently marked a significant milestone by celebrating Pool Transport as the tenth customer to successfully complete the DTSA Fleet Owner Workplace Wellness Programme. This initiative underscores DTSA’s commitment to enhancing the health and wellbeing of truck drivers across the region.

Since its inception in 2013, the DTSA Fleet Owner Workplace Wellness Programme has offered a comprehensive approach to health management within the trucking industry. It aims to mitigate the effects of illness on the operational and financial stability of its key account customers by focusing on driver health. This focus is part of a broader strategy to ensure the safety and efficiency of road freight logistics.

On April 19, 2024, Pool Transport emerged as the latest company to fulfill the requirements of this wellness initiative, guided by the National Bargaining Council for the Road Freight and Logistics Industry’s (NBCRFLI) Trucking Wellness Project. The program now includes components like fatigue management policies and a medical certification process, tailored to address the evolving needs of the industry.

Dirkie van Zyl, Managing Director of Pool Transport, expressed gratitude towards DTSA and its partners, emphasizing the shared responsibility in promoting driver wellness and road safety. Tertius Wessels, who manages Trucking Wellness for the NBCRFLI, highlighted the strengthened partnerships that have evolved from this long-standing collaboration, which enhances the understanding and implementation of wellness services in the transport sector.

Maretha Gerber, President and Group CEO of DTSA, reaffirmed the organization’s dedication to providing primary healthcare access to truck drivers, recognizing their critical role in maintaining safer roads in South Africa.

Pool Transport, established in 1955 and officially registered in 1965, has grown to become a hallmark of reliability and safety in cargo delivery, with a robust fleet primarily composed of Mercedes-Benz Trucks. This dedication to excellence in service and driver welfare continues to propel the company forward, supported by its strong partnership with DTSA.

The success of the DTSA Fleet Owner Workplace Wellness Programme not only highlights the commitment of participating companies like Pool Transport but also the effective collaboration between DTSA, Trucking Wellness, and the NBCRFLI to foster a culture of health and empowerment within the transport industry.
