GQEBERHA, South Africa, March 19, 2025 – Continental, a global leader in tyre technology, leaves nothing to chance when it comes to the development and quality control of its tyres. With a relentless focus on performance, safety, and durability, the company subjects all of its tyre models to extensive and sophisticated testing procedures. These tests encompass a combination of objective and subjective methods, including virtual simulations, automated tests, and real-world assessments, ensuring that every tyre meets the highest standards before it reaches the road.
The Rigorous Testing Process: 25 Million Test Kilometres Annually
To put the scale of Continental’s testing efforts into perspective, the company completes an astonishing 25 million test kilometres each year. That’s the equivalent of circumnavigating the globe 625 times. These tests are performed using state-of-the-art roller drum test rigs and purpose-built test tracks, each specifically designed to push the limits of tyre performance under a wide variety of conditions. The result is a tyre that is ready to face any challenge on the road, no matter the climate, terrain, or driving situation.
Objective and Subjective Testing: A Dual Approach
Continental’s tyre testing is divided into two main categories: objective and subjective tests.
Objective tests include precise, repeatable laboratory assessments, where tyres are subjected to braking tests across different surfaces – from dry to wet, icy to snowy roads. These tests provide clear, quantifiable data on how tyres perform under specific conditions, ensuring that the tyres’ safety and handling characteristics are fully optimized.
On the other hand, subjective tests involve real-world assessments where experienced drivers evaluate the tyre’s performance on Continental’s global network of test tracks. These tracks are designed to replicate a variety of driving environments and conditions. Test drivers perform detailed evaluations, assessing the vehicle’s stability, handling, and high-speed performance on different surfaces throughout the year. It’s a critical step in determining how tyres behave in dynamic, real-world scenarios.
Virtual and Automated Testing: A Technological Revolution
As digitalisation continues to transform the automotive industry, Continental is at the forefront of integrating advanced technology into its testing process. Virtualisation and automation have streamlined the development cycle, allowing the company to gain invaluable insights even before the first physical tyre is produced.
At the Contidrom test site near Hanover, the Driver-in-the-Loop (DIL) Simulator offers a cutting-edge solution for virtual testing. This highly advanced simulator allows test drivers to experience tyre performance through a virtual environment, simulating various driving conditions with remarkable accuracy. By using real-time data, the system reproduces the exact driving dynamics of both the tyre and the test vehicle. The result is a comprehensive and efficient assessment of a tyre’s potential, without the need for an actual physical test track. The feedback gained from the simulator helps Continental refine tyre solutions before production begins, saving time and reducing resource consumption.
The Automated Indoor Braking Analyser (AIBA), opened in 2012 at the Contidrom, further enhances Continental’s testing capabilities. This 300-metre-long, state-of-the-art facility tests the braking performance of tyres fitted to fully automated, driverless vehicles. Operating year-round in any weather, the AIBA removes unpredictable external factors, providing highly reproducible results that traditional methods can’t match. With up to 100,000 tests performed annually, AIBA plays a pivotal role in validating new tyre prototypes and ensuring the performance of production tyres.

The Analytical Vehicle AIBA: A New Frontier in Testing
Since 2022, Continental has also employed the Analytical Vehicle AIBA (AVA), a fully electric, driverless test vehicle developed in-house. This cutting-edge vehicle offers an even more precise way to conduct braking tests, replacing traditional, vehicle-specific test methods. The AVA provides a deeper understanding of how tyres interact with various rubber compounds and tread designs, offering valuable insights into improving tyre performance and safety.
A Commitment to Quality, Safety, and Performance
At Continental, every aspect of tyre development – from virtual simulations to real-world track testing – is designed with a singular goal in mind: to produce tyres of unparalleled quality, safety, and performance. The combination of digital innovation and rigorous physical testing methods ensures that Continental’s tyres perform at the highest level across a diverse range of driving conditions.
Whether it’s advancing industry-leading technologies, pioneering new tread compounds, or continually refining tyre solutions, Continental’s commitment to excellence remains unwavering. As the company continues to push the boundaries of tyre testing, drivers around the world can trust that the tyres beneath their vehicles are the result of extensive research, innovation, and dedication to safety.
Continental’s tyre testing process isn’t just about going the distance – it’s about ensuring that every journey, no matter how long or challenging, is met with the utmost confidence and security.
