Chery Automobile and UNICEF Enhance Education Programs in Earthquake-Affected Regions of Türkiye

From June 6th to 7th, 2024, a delegation from Chery Automobile joined UNICEF on an extensive visit to the regions of Hatay, Nurdağı, and Kilis in Türkiye, which were severely impacted by the February 2023 earthquakes. The focus of this visit was on educational programs ranging from early childhood education to adolescent skills development.

During the two-day visit, the Chery delegation actively engaged in educational and skill-development activities, interacting closely with students, teachers, and local stakeholders. Their participation underscored their dedication to supporting and understanding local educational initiatives. The delegation conveyed messages of hope and emphasized the importance of quality education for all children.

The visit commenced at Hilalkent 2 School in Hatay, built in collaboration with the Turkish Ministry of National Education (MoNE) and UNICEF. The delegation observed and participated in mathematics and Turkish lessons, gaining first-hand insight into the current educational environment. Key figures such as Mr. Zhang Guibing, General Manager of Chery International, Mr. Paolo Marchi, UNICEF Representative to Türkiye, and Mr. Zhang Shengshan, Executive Vice President of Chery International, engaged with the students and held meaningful discussions with the educational staff.

Reflecting on the visit, Mr. Zhang Guibing remarked, “Protecting every child’s right to education is Chery’s driving force. We remain committed to supporting UNICEF’s efforts to enhance children’s education. This collaboration embodies Chery’s dedication to fostering societal progress.”

The delegation further explored UNICEF-supported early childhood education programs by visiting two centers, gaining a deeper understanding of the current state and challenges in early childhood education in Türkiye. They also engaged in arts and crafts activities with the children, fostering a warm and interactive learning environment.

At the Canpolat Pasa Youth Centre, the delegation observed the skills training program, which prepares young people for the future by equipping them with essential skills. In Nurdağı, they witnessed students involved in robotics and 3D modeling projects, showcasing innovative learning approaches. In Kilis, they interacted with students participating in art and English courses, highlighting the diverse educational opportunities available to support the affected communities.

Following these visits, the Chery Automobile team held comprehensive discussions with local Turkish government officials, education department representatives, and the UNICEF team. These discussions provided valuable insights into the progress of local educational programs, including digital mobile technology initiatives. The delegation reaffirmed their commitment to ongoing collaboration with UNICEF and other international organizations to enhance children’s education, support their dreams, and collectively build a brighter future.

“This visit solidifies our partnership with Chery Automobile and our shared commitment to ensuring children in Türkiye have access to quality education. Through this partnership and the flexible funding provided, we can reach children with timely educational support, including those in the earthquake-affected areas. Private sector partnerships like this one with Chery Automobile play a crucial role in UNICEF’s efforts to amplify impact, leverage resources, and create sustainable solutions for vulnerable children in Türkiye and around the world,” stated Paolo Marchi, UNICEF Representative to Türkiye.

On October 17th, 2023, Chery Automobile and UNICEF announced a new two-year, $6 million partnership to support education programs globally.

Looking forward, Chery will continue to prioritize global public welfare initiatives in environmental protection and social care, striving to achieve mutual benefits with consumers, employees, and partners.
