Casterton Haulage’s fleet is driving into a new era of efficiency and performance. Following a dramatic improvement in fuel economy from its initial two Mercedes-Benz Actros tractor units, the Sheffield-based family firm has now invested in a third model. The decision underscores the company’s commitment to excellence and innovation, supported by the dependable service from Dealer Bell Truck and Van.
Meeting Urgent Needs with Precision
In 2023, when Casterton Haulage urgently required a replacement vehicle, Managing Director Mark Casterton turned to an established relationship with Bell Truck and Van. “We were in a tight spot,” recalls Mr. Casterton. “Our existing vehicles were from different brands, and none could offer the quick delivery we needed. I knew Carl Belch, Bell Truck and Van’s Sales Director, and he immediately confirmed they could meet our deadline.”
That initial order was for an Actros L 1853—a high-spec 4×2 tractor unit equipped with a powerful 12.8-litre, in-line six-cylinder engine generating 390 kW (530 hp). The prompt and smooth delivery process set the stage for further collaboration.
Fuel Efficiency that Speaks Volumes
The Actros models have not only met the company’s logistical demands but have also brought noticeable benefits in fuel economy—a critical factor for long-haul operations. “I drive the 530 hp Actros myself, and it’s a great truck,” said Mr. Casterton. “On its first long-distance trip to Portugal, alongside one of our seven-year-old units, it averaged a full two miles per gallon better. The fuel savings alone are significant when you’re running a fleet that covers Europe.”
A second Actros, similarly configured with a 375 kW (510 hp) powerplant, proved to be equally economical. Both vehicles, optimized with Low-liner reduced frame height for European work including event and concert logistics, reaffirmed Mercedes-Benz’s reputation for merging performance with efficiency.

Expanding Capabilities for Diverse Operations
Encouraged by the savings and performance, Casterton Haulage has now added a third Mercedes-Benz Actros to its fleet. This latest addition, the Actros L 2558, is a robust 6×2 unit featuring a 15.6-litre engine delivering 425 kW (580 hp). The new truck is tailored for heavy-duty tasks such as steel transport while still maintaining the versatility needed for the company’s event logistics and general haulage operations.
“We’ve developed a specialism in event logistics but I still class us as a general haulier,” Mr. Casterton explained. “While our 4×2 units are perfect for event work, the new 580 hp model is equipped for more demanding tasks. Yet, every vehicle in our fleet can handle whatever comes our way.”
Partnership and Beyond
The transition to a Mercedes-Benz dominant fleet has been seamless, bolstered by competitive funding from Daimler Truck Financial Services and comprehensive ServiceContracts that simplify maintenance. “I usually drive the trucks to the Team Valley depot for routine service, and Bell’s support is second to none—they often provide a loan vehicle or even office space when needed. It’s more than a business transaction; it’s a partnership,” Mr. Casterton remarked.
Established in 1998, Casterton Haulage is a family-run operation where every member plays a role. With Mark at the wheel of the Actros 1853, his brother Jason managing the 1851, and the next generation—with son James now commanding the keys to the newest unit and daughter Raechel running RAE Transport—the company’s commitment to quality and service remains unwavering.
Driving Forward
The success story of Casterton Haulage and its evolving fleet is a testament to the power of strategic partnerships and the relentless pursuit of efficiency. As the company continues to expand and innovate, the Mercedes-Benz Actros stands at the forefront, not just as a vehicle, but as a symbol of progress and performance in the competitive world of European haulage.
