Canadian Penny 4 February 2013
Today Google have announced the end of the Canadian Penny on the Google Canada search engine homepage with a Google Doodle. The Canadian Penny have been in circulation since 1858 and had a diameter of 25.4 millimeters and weight 4.54 grams. The Canadian Penny have been in circulation for more than 137 years and today February 4, 2013 marks the end of a period in history.
The Royal Canadian Mint have decided to stop minting the Penny due to economical reasons and costs. It is estimated that the move to stop minting the Penny will save the Canadian tax payers more than 11 Million Dollars per year.
In order to smooth the transition for consumers, charities and retailers, a new rounding system goes into effect. Purchases ending in $0.1, $0.2, $0.6 and $0.7, will be rounded down, while those ending in $0.3, $0.4, $.08 and $.09 will be rounded up.
