Sandton, Johannesburg — October 2025

A quiet revolution is reshaping South Africa’s automotive marketplace. At the intersection of human intuition and artificial intelligence, AutoTrader has unveiled AutoTrader Intelligence (ATI)—a next-generation platform designed to make buying and selling cars simpler, smarter, and more human.

The launch took place at AutoTrader Dealer Connect 2025, an exclusive event hosted at the Galleria in Sandton, where over 500 dealer partners gathered to witness the debut of AutoTrader’s most ambitious AI-powered innovations to date. Built on decades of automotive expertise and real-time market data, AutoTrader Intelligence promises to redefine how people interact with cars online—delivering clarity for buyers and efficiency for dealers.

A Smarter, More Human Car-Buying Experience

At its core, AutoTrader Intelligence fuses large language model (LLM) AI with live market insights, giving both buyers and dealers the tools to make better, faster decisions.

For consumers, that means relevant recommendations, transparent comparisons, and instant confidence in their choices. For dealers, it means powerful automation that reduces admin, improves listing quality, and allows them to focus on what matters most—connecting with people.

“Technology will never take the human element out of buying a car. It merely makes it easier to build that connection,” says George Mienie, CEO of AutoTrader South Africa. “With AutoTrader Intelligence, we’ve created AI that works quietly in the background—doing the heavy lifting so that dealers can understand their customers better, and buyers can make decisions that truly feel right for them.”

From Data to Decisions: The Power of AutoTrader Intelligence

AutoTrader Intelligence enhances the car-browsing experience in two major ways: by clarifying what makes each vehicle unique and by intelligently suggesting others that fit a buyer’s profile.

AutoTrader Intelligence – Vehicle Highlights

Using AI alongside data from manufacturers, customer insights, and AutoTrader’s own vast dataset, Vehicle Highlights automatically compares thousands of similar cars based on factors like mileage, ownership history, emissions, and fuel economy. It then displays what makes each listing stand out—whether it’s lower mileage, better performance, or superior efficiency—right on the vehicle page.

The result: shoppers can immediately see why a car is worth their attention, without digging through endless specifications. It’s data-driven clarity designed to inspire confidence and speed up decision-making.

AutoTrader Intelligence – Recommendation Engine

This feature personalises each user’s browsing journey. If someone is looking at, say, a compact SUV, the AI will recommend other vehicles with similar attributes—perhaps a rival model with better fuel economy or a version with upgraded tech features. The experience feels intuitive, almost conversational, allowing buyers to explore relevant alternatives they may never have considered.

Together, Vehicle Highlights and the Recommendation Engine turn AutoTrader into a living, learning assistant—constantly refining the experience based on user behaviour.

Empowering Dealers with Smarter Tools

Behind the consumer-facing innovation is a suite of dealer tools that use AI to enhance productivity, consistency, and market intelligence.

AutoTrader Intelligence – Comments Generator

This generative AI tool instantly produces professional, detailed descriptions using the information already entered into a listing—model, variant, mileage, colour, and more. What used to take up to 12 minutes now takes just three seconds. Dealers can edit or regenerate the text for a perfect fit, saving thousands of hours of admin time across the network.

AutoTrader Intelligence – Image Management

By analysing every uploaded photo, this system classifies images by type—exterior, interior, engine, etc.—and recommends missing shots to ensure full coverage. It also reorders photos based on what buyers engage with most, helping listings perform better visually and attract faster sales.

AutoTrader Intelligence – Dealer Insights

This real-time dashboard provides a dynamic view of market conditions, showing demand, supply, and pricing trends per listing. Dealers can see instantly whether a car is priced right, in high demand, or needs attention—without crunching data manually.

Together, these innovations create a seamless ecosystem where listings are sharper, more engaging, and better aligned with what buyers want right now.

The Future of Buying and Selling, Powered by AI

For AutoTrader, AutoTrader Intelligence isn’t just another product launch—it’s a milestone in a long journey toward smarter, more transparent car trading.

“AutoTrader Intelligence represents the next step in our innovation journey,” adds Mienie. “It’s about using data to better serve consumers, creating a car-buying experience that’s simpler, smarter, and ultimately more human.”

Looking ahead, AutoTrader plans to expand ATI’s capabilities even further. Future updates will integrate insights from the platform’s extensive Ratings and Reviews system and specifications database, offering deeper comparisons and personalised content for each user.

As this quiet revolution continues, one thing is clear: AutoTrader Intelligence isn’t just changing how South Africans buy and sell cars—it’s redefining the relationship between people, data, and technology.
