The Southern Group of Motoring Writers (SGMW) recently hosted its seventh annual heritage day at the National Motor Museum in Beaulieu, Hampshire. This year’s event was made even more special by the inclusion of new manufacturers, bringing a modern twist to a day steeped in nostalgia.

Organized by SGMW secretary Chris Rees, a key figure in bringing this event to life each year, the heritage driving day has become a beloved tradition. “This is my personal highlight. I love the heritage driving day,” Rees shared, reflecting the enthusiasm that fuels the event’s continued success.

A total of 20 SGMW members were joined by 29 PR representatives from 14 different automotive brands, creating a vibrant atmosphere filled with shared passion and camaraderie. Together, they experienced the thrill of driving 32 cars, ranging from cutting-edge electric vehicles and rugged off-roaders to iconic classic models that have left an indelible mark on automotive history.

A Fusion of Old and New

The event’s lineup featured an exciting mix of vehicles. Among the highlights were the Abarth 500e Convertible, the BYD Dolphin, and the latest offerings from Genesis, including the GV60 and the electrified GV70. These modern marvels stood alongside a dazzling array of heritage models, such as the Ford Capri L, Honda S2000, and Mazda MX-5 Mark 1, each evoking memories of a bygone era.

Volvo made a significant impact with its heritage fleet, showcasing the P1800, 262C, 850 T-5R, and XC90 V8. The P1800, in particular, captivated attendees, earning the title of best manufacturer’s car of the day—a testament to its timeless appeal.

The event also served as a platform for SGMW members to showcase their personal vehicles, adding a personal touch to the gathering. Notable among these was Stu Bird’s Volkswagen Beetle Douglas Special, a stunning tribute to the classic Herbie. The Beetle’s charm and intricate details, reminiscent of the original movie star car, earned it the coveted title of best member’s car of the day, marking a hat-trick of wins for Bird.

A Day of Connection and Competition

Beyond the cars, the heritage day was a chance for members and PR professionals to connect in a relaxed, informal setting. The event’s atmosphere was further enlivened by the traditional SGMW quiz, which saw David Wilkins triumph in a close contest with Peter Nunn.

The day’s success was echoed by attendees like Simon Branney, head of PR and communications for Genesis Motor UK, who praised the event as “one of the highlights of the summer, if not the whole year.” Despite Genesis’s absence from the heritage scene, the brand felt welcomed and supported, highlighting the inclusive nature of the SGMW community.

Tom Lynch, Volvo Car UK’s head of communications, emphasized the value of the event as a rare opportunity to see industry professionals driving each other’s cars in a convivial environment. Rachel Goodwin, head of PR for BYD in the UK, and Will Rees, Kia UK press officer, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of such gatherings for networking and brand-building.

As the day drew to a close, the shared experience of driving iconic cars, both old and new, left a lasting impression on all who attended. The combination of memorable motors, laughter, and the picturesque setting of Beaulieu made this year’s SGMW heritage day a resounding success—a true celebration of automotive heritage and innovation.
